What Is Being Made
The Frog Bag is a small, structured knitted container designed by Stana D. Sortor. This beginner-friendly project creates a finished bag measuring 5 inches (13 cm) wide and 8.5 inches (21.5 cm) long, including the flap. The design features a charming frog motif, making it a whimsical accessory suitable for storing small items or as a decorative piece.
Craft and Techniques
This project is created using knitting as the primary craft method. The bag is worked in the round, a fundamental knitting technique that creates seamless, tubular fabric. Knitting in the round is an excellent method for creating three-dimensional objects like bags and containers without the need for seaming.
The pattern incorporates several essential knitting techniques appropriate for beginners:
- Increasing stitches using the KFB (knit in front and back) method, which creates two stitches from a single stitch to shape the bag
- Decreasing stitches using K2tog (knit two stitches together) to reduce stitch counts and form the bag's structure
- Stockinette stitch as the primary stitch pattern, creating a smooth, classic fabric surface
- Color work for the frog's facial features, using contrast colors to add detail and character to the finished piece
Stitches Used
The Frog Bag utilizes fundamental knitting stitches suitable for beginner crafters:
- Stockinette stitch forms the main fabric body, created by alternating knit and purl rows (or knit rounds when working in the round)
- KFB (knit in front and back) increases stitches to expand the bag's width and create shaping
- K2tog (knit two together) decreases stitches to form the bag's contours and create definition
- Bind off secures the final stitches to complete the project
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, with Cascade 220 Superwash recommended in the colorway Wasabi (a vibrant green shade). Cascade 220 Superwash is 100% superwash wool, offering durability and easy care. The project requires minimal yardage: 50 yards (46 meters) of the main color, plus 5 yards (4.5 meters) each of black and white yarn for the frog's eyes.
Needles: Double pointed needles (DPN) in US size #5 (3.75 mm) are recommended, specifically a set of five needles for knitting in the round. Alternatively, crafters may use their preferred needles for circular knitting.
Gauge: The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge ensures the finished bag meets the intended measurements.
Additional Notions: The project requires a yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors, a stitch marker for tracking rounds, polyester fiberfill for stuffing (to give the bag structure and dimension), and one optional button for embellishment or closure.
Yarn Weight Flexibility
While worsted weight yarn is the primary recommendation, this pattern accommodates DK weight yarn as well, offering crafters flexibility in material selection. Using different yarn weights may affect the finished dimensions and yardage requirements, making this project adaptable to various yarn stashes.
