Product Description

Recently I discovered how practical pulse warmers are. They really work! How could I resist making a pair or two with superfluous frills?

These pulse warmers begin with a provisional cast on and are worked sideways. The live stitches are grafted at the end. Classic garter stitch is embellished with a no wrap short row ruffle.

The sample was knit in Drops Alpaca. A substitute yarn is shown below.

What is Being Made

The Frilly Pulse Warmers are a pair of delicate knitted wrist accessories designed to warm the pulse points on the inner wrists. These advanced-level mittens measure 3.25 inches in length with a 6-inch circumference, making them fitted wrist warmers rather than full mittens. They are worked as individual pieces using a sideways construction method.

Construction and Techniques

This project employs several sophisticated knitting techniques that elevate it to advanced difficulty level. The pulse warmers begin with a provisional cast on, allowing for a seamless finish. The pieces are worked sideways, which creates an interesting directional fabric and requires careful stitch management. The construction culminates in grafting live stitches at the end, a technique that joins two sets of live stitches invisibly for a professional, seamless result.

A distinctive design feature is the incorporation of a no-wrap short row ruffle that embellishes the classic garter stitch base. Short rows create the three-dimensional shaping and ruffled texture without using the wrap-and-turn method, demonstrating advanced technical skill. Steam blocking is recommended prior to grafting, particularly suited to the yarn choice, which helps set the stitches and enhance the drape of the ruffled details.

Stitches Used

  • Garter stitch as the primary stitch structure
  • Knit stitches and purl stitches for texture variation
  • Slip stitches (worked purlwise and knitwise) for edge definition
  • Short rows (no-wrap technique) for the ruffle embellishment
  • Grafting (Kitchener stitch) to join live stitches seamlessly

Materials and Specifications

The Frilly Pulse Warmers are designed to be worked in Drops Alpaca, a luxurious 100% alpaca yarn that provides softness and warmth. The yarn is classified as sport weight, with a yardage of 182 yards (167 meters) per 50-gram skein. This project requires only 0.5 skeins, making it an economical choice for a small accessory project.

The pattern calls for US #3 / 3.25 mm double-point needles, which are essential for working the small circumference in the round or for the sideways construction. Additional materials include scrap yarn for the provisional cast on and a tapestry needle for grafting and weaving in ends.

Gauge and Fit

The pattern specifies a gauge of 26 stitches and 44 rows over 4 inches in garter stitch. Achieving this gauge is critical for obtaining the correct finished measurements of 3.25 inches in length and 6 inches in circumference. The relatively tight gauge creates a dense, durable fabric suitable for a wrist warmer that will experience regular wear and movement.
