Fresta Hat by Corrine Walcher

What is Being Made

The Fresta Hat is a winter knit hat designed by Corrine Walcher featuring a finished circumference of 21 inches that stretches to approximately 23 inches. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a classic, wearable accessory with decorative cable detailing at the hem. The designer also offers coordinating pieces, including the Fresta cowl and fingerless mitts, allowing crafters to build a complete set.

Construction and Techniques

The Fresta Hat employs a deceptively simple construction method that begins with knitting a decorative cable hem. Once the cable hem is complete, the two ends are joined together, and stitches are picked up from the hem to begin knitting the crown. This pick-up method creates a seamless transition from the patterned hem to the body of the hat and is an efficient approach for intermediate knitters looking to build their technical skills.

Stitches Used

The pattern incorporates several essential knitting stitches and cable techniques:

  • Knit (K) and Purl (P) stitches form the foundation of the stockinette stitch base
  • Knit two stitches together (K2tog) for decreasing
  • 2/1 Left Purl Cable (2/1 LPC): Slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in front, purl 1, then knit 2 from cable needle
  • 2/1 Right Purl Cable (2/1 RPC): Slip 1 stitch to cable needle and hold in back, knit 2, then purl 1 from cable needle
  • 2/2 Left Cable (2/2 LC): Slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in front, knit 2, then knit 2 from cable needle

These cable stitches create the traditional intertwining pattern that wraps around the hem, providing both visual interest and structural integrity to the hat.

Materials and Gauge

The Fresta Hat pattern calls for Dragonfly Fibers Traveller, a 100% superwash merino wool yarn with 280 yards per 4 ounces. The sample project used approximately 130 yards of yarn, making this an economical project for yarn stash use. Knitters work with US size 5 (3.75 mm) needles, using a 16-inch circular needle and a set of 5 double-pointed needles or an alternative preferred method for knitting small circumferences in the round. The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches when blocked in stockinette stitch worked in the round, which is typical for DK weight yarn and ensures proper fit and drape.
