Freestyle Cap by Cheryl Andrews
What Is Being Made
The Freestyle Cap is an intermediate-level knitted hat designed for adult medium heads (21-23" circumference). This ribbed hat features a distinctive x-shaped crown, a structured brim, and a rolled-up cuff. The design showcases innovative construction techniques that create a hat with professional shaping and a firm brim without requiring internal support materials.
Design Features
- Ribbed construction throughout for stretch and comfort
- X-shaped crown detail at the top
- Rolled-up cuff for a finished appearance
- Structured brim that holds its shape through geometric shaping and gauge control
- Adjustable height from cuff to crown
- No internal bracing required—the brim's structure is achieved through knitting technique alone
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs ribbed stitch work as the primary stitch pattern, which provides both visual interest and functional stretch. The brim is engineered using geometric shaping and tight gauge to create structure without cardboard or plastic inserts. The double-layered brim construction contributes to its ability to hold its shape. The pattern includes instructions for managing wraps during construction, which are essential to maintaining the brim's structural integrity.
The hat is knitted in the round using circular needles, a technique that creates seamless construction. The x-shaped crown is formed through strategic decreases that shape the top of the hat.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: Worsted weight yarn, approximately 175 yards total. The pattern samples were created using Cascade 220 (100% wool, 220 yards per 100g skein), though Malabrigo Merino worsted is also recommended as a suitable alternative.
Needles and Notions:
- Two size 6 circular needles, 16" length
- One set of size 6 double-pointed needles (set of 5)
- One smaller diameter circular needle in sizes 0, 1, 2, or 3 (any length) for the welt
- One stitch marker
- Waste yarn (approximately 1 yard)
- Yarn needle with big eye and blunt tip for weaving in ends
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked at a tight gauge of 19 stitches and 27 rows over 4 inches when knitting in the round. This tight gauge is critical to the brim's ability to maintain its shape. The hat is sized for adult medium (21-23" circumference) and features ribbed construction that provides stretch for comfortable fit. The height can be adjusted according to personal preference.
