FREE Preemie Baby RAINBOW Stalk Beanie and Pixie Hats
What Is Being Made
This knitting pattern from madmonkeyknits (Pattern no. 1460) provides instructions for creating two coordinating hat styles designed specifically for preemie babies: a Rainbow Stalk Beanie and Pixie Hats. The designs feature a vibrant rainbow color scheme with stripes in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. The pattern includes five size options ranging from XS to XL to accommodate preemie babies from 1–6 pounds in weight, with head circumferences from 23–33 centimeters (9–13 inches).
Techniques Used
This beginner-level knitting pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters new to the craft. The construction begins with casting on stitches using single-pointed needles, followed by ribbed edging to create a stretchy, fitted opening. The main body of the hats is worked in stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for baby garments. Decreasing techniques are used to shape the crown and create the characteristic topknot or pixie point at the top of each hat. The rainbow effect is achieved through color work, changing yarn colors at regular intervals to create horizontal stripes throughout the hat.
Stitches Used
- 1x1 Ribbing: Alternating knit and purl stitches (K1, P1) create the elastic cuff at the base of each hat, ensuring a snug fit around a baby's head
- Stockinette Stitch (St.st): The primary stitch used for the main body, created by knitting one row and purling the next row in alternation, producing a smooth, flat fabric
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog): A basic decrease technique used to reduce stitches gradually when shaping the crown and forming the topknot or pixie point
Materials and Specifications
The pattern calls for 4 ply knitting yarn in six colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. The designer recommends West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 ply yarn, though any 4 ply yarn of equivalent weight may be substituted. Each color requires 10 grams per hat. A single pair of 3.00 mm single-point knitting needles is needed to achieve the correct tension.
Tension: The pattern specifies 28 stitches and 36 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches) when working in stockinette stitch on 3.00 mm needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for proper fit, particularly important when knitting for preemie babies who require precise sizing.
Size Range and Fit
The pattern accommodates five size categories based on baby weight and head circumference. Sizes range from XS (for babies weighing 1–2 pounds with a 23–25 centimeter head circumference) through XL (for babies weighing 5–6 pounds with a 32–33 centimeter head circumference). The actual finished measurements of the hats range from 20 centimeters (8 inches) for the smallest size to 30 centimeters (12 inches) for the largest, ensuring appropriate coverage and comfort for each size category.
