Product Description
Wrap your neck is cushiony warmth! The dimpled fabric of the cowl, combined with the insulating properties of the camel and yak fibers used in the samples (Brown cowl is made in The Verdant Gryphon 'Mondegreen' and the blue cowl is Lang Yarns 'Yak'), ensure you will stay toasty warm during even the coldest of days.
Although the look of this stitch pattern is quite different on each side, both the “right side” and the “wrong side” are very attractive. In the photo of the blue cowl worn with the matching hat, the reverse side of the fabric is shown.
P.S. Fossetta means “dimple” in Italian.

Fossetta Set by Janelle Martin
The Fossetta Set is a coordinating collection of knitted accessories designed by Janelle Martin for Eclectic Closet. This downloadable PDF pattern includes instructions for creating a matching cowl and hat using beginner-friendly knitting techniques. Both pieces showcase the same distinctive stitch pattern and are suitable for knitters new to textured fabric construction.
Fossetta Cowl
The Fossetta Cowl is a neck wrap designed to provide cushioned warmth through its unique dimpled fabric texture. The cowl features a reversible stitch pattern that creates distinctly different appearances on each side—both the right side and wrong side are visually attractive, allowing knitters flexibility in how they wear the finished piece. In the pattern's sample photography, the cowl is shown worn with the reverse side of the fabric displayed, demonstrating this reversible quality.
The cowl is worked on a circular needle and finished to a blocked circumference of 54 inches (137.16 cm) with a width of 8 inches (20.32 cm), making it a generous neck accessory suitable for wrapping and layering.
Techniques and Stitches: The pattern uses Chart A as the primary stitch guide, featuring a textured stitch pattern that creates the characteristic dimpled fabric. The gauge for this charted pattern is 16 stitches and 24 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) when blocked, worked in the round on circular needles.
Materials: The cowl requires one US #9/5.5 mm circular needle measuring 32 inches (80 cm), or a size adjusted to obtain proper gauge. The pattern calls for 400 yards (366 meters) of worsted weight yarn that knits to 4 to 5 stitches per inch. The sample shown features a wool and silk blend yarn, though the pattern accommodates various fiber content options. The insulating properties of camel and yak fibers are noted in the sample construction, contributing to the cowl's warmth retention.
Fossetta Hat
The Fossetta Hat is designed as a coordinating companion piece to the Fossetta Cowl, sharing the same distinctive dimpled stitch pattern. The hat is included in this downloadable pattern set and works with the same yarn weight and needle size as the cowl.
Yarn Weight and Difficulty: Both pieces in the Fossetta Set are worked with aran weight yarn and are classified as beginner-level projects, though the cowl pattern notes an advanced beginner skill level. This classification makes the set accessible to knitters developing their skills with textured stitch patterns and circular needle techniques.
