Product Description
If you are heading out for a woodland walk, to kick up the leaves and search for pine cones what could be better than a pair of handknit socks to keep your toes toasty? Knit in stocking stitch with a delicate pine cone pattern, these socks will be the perfect companion on your quest for nature.
Knit in West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4ply, these socks are worked in the round from the toe up using Judy’s magic cast-on. The pine cone pattern is worked along the top of the foot and front of the leg, and can be worked from the chart or written instructions. The heel flap and gusset are created using short rows and a series of simple increases and decreases.

What Is Being Made
Forest Floor Socks are hand-knit socks designed for woodland walks and outdoor adventures. These socks feature a delicate pine cone pattern worked into stocking stitch, combining practical everyday wear with nature-inspired decorative details. The pattern offers multiple size options to accommodate different foot measurements, making these socks accessible for a range of knitters.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project worked in the round using either circular needles with the magic loop method or double-pointed needles. Working in the round creates seamless socks with continuous stitch rows, eliminating the need for seaming. The socks are constructed using stocking stitch as the primary fabric, which creates a smooth, classic knit surface ideal for comfortable sock wear. The delicate pine cone pattern is integrated into the stocking stitch fabric, adding visual interest while maintaining the sock's functionality. This is an intermediate-level pattern, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with charted colorwork or textured stitch patterns.
Stitches Used
- Stocking stitch – the main fabric structure creating a smooth, flat knit surface
- Pine cone pattern – a delicate decorative motif worked into the sock fabric
Materials
Yarn: West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4ply in the Nutmeg colourway from the Spice Rack Collection. This yarn is composed of 75% wool and 25% nylon, providing durability and warmth with nylon reinforcement for sock longevity. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 93 to 197 meters (102 to 215 yards) for smaller sizes, and 238 to 378 meters (260 to 413 yards) for larger sizes.
Needles and notions: 2.5 mm (US 1.5) circular needles measuring 80 cm (32 inches) for magic loop construction, or double-pointed needles as an alternative. Additional supplies include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends. The recommended gauge is 33 stitches by 54 rounds over 10 cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished sock size.
