Product Description
My favorite craft is crochet, but occasionally I will knit something if the need arises. Recently a family member asked me for a football themed earwarmer, so I made this for her. It's worked on a 16" circular No. 11 needle. I used my scrap basket - brown and white like a football - but you could easily make it in your favorite team's colors or school colors. If you're experienced on a circular needle, it only a takes a couple of hours to make one.
Football Earwarmer Knitting Pattern by Lisa Ferrel
What Is Being Made
The Football Earwarmer is a beginner-friendly knitted headwear accessory designed to keep ears warm while celebrating football style. This finished piece measures approximately 20 inches in circumference, stretching to accommodate up to 22 inches for a comfortable fit across the head. The earwarmer features a classic ribbed knit construction with contrasting color stripes and decorative football stitching embroidered on the front.
Techniques Used
This knitting pattern employs fundamental techniques suitable for beginners learning the craft. The construction begins with a cast-on to establish stitches on the circular needle, followed by color changes to create the striped design. The ribbed knit pattern creates natural stretch and recovery, making the earwarmer conform comfortably to different head sizes. The pattern concludes with a bind-off to secure the final row, and finishing techniques including weaving in yarn ends and hand embroidery to add decorative football stitching details on the front surface.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k): The primary stitch that creates the fabric structure
- Purl stitch (p): Used in alternating sequence with knit stitches to create ribbed texture
- Ribbed knit pattern (k1, p1): Alternating knit and purl stitches worked in sequence to produce the characteristic elastic ribbed fabric throughout most of the earwarmer
- Cast-on (CO): Initial stitch setup using 78 stitches
- Bind-off (BO): Securing the final row of stitches to complete the piece
Materials and Tools
This pattern requires worsted weight yarn in three colors: brown, white, and black. Only small amounts of each color are needed, making this an excellent project for using yarn scraps or leftover yarn from other projects. The pattern calls for a Size 11 circular needle measuring 16 inches for the main knitting, with a Size 9 needle used specifically for the bind-off row to create a neat, finished edge. The embroidery work is completed using a needle suitable for threading yarn to add white football stitches as the final decorative touch.
