Flower Basket Tea Cosy by Andrea Lesley Crochet
What Is Being Made
This is a crochet tea cosy designed to fit standard 4-6 cup teapots, including the classic Brown Betty style. The tea cosy features a decorative basket of flowers motif, combining a structured base with embellished floral elements that add visual interest to your kitchen table.
Craft and Technique Overview
The Flower Basket Tea Cosy is created using the crochet technique, an accessible fiber craft that uses a single hook to loop yarn into interconnected stitches. This intermediate-level project combines fundamental crochet skills with post stitches and shaping techniques to create both a functional and decorative kitchen accessory.
Crochet Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch) - the foundation stitch used to begin the project
- Double crochet (dc) - a basic short stitch providing structure and density
- Half treble (htr) - a medium-height stitch used for varied texture
- Treble stitch (tr) - a taller stitch creating openness and drape
- Front post treble (FPtr) - a specialty stitch worked around the post of previous stitches for dimensional texture
- Back post treble (BPtr) - a post stitch worked behind previous stitches for ribbed or textured effects
- Slip stitch (sl st) - used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This pattern uses a two-weight yarn approach for visual variety and construction efficiency:
- Aran weight yarn - 100g for the tea cosy base, providing structure and insulation. The pattern is designed using Stitch Nation's Bamboo Ewe in the colorway Sprout, though any Aran weight yarn of similar characteristics may be substituted
- DK weight yarn - 50g for the crochet flowers, allowing for delicate, detailed floral elements
- DK weight yarn - 2 yards for the leaves, creating botanical accents
Tools and Equipment
- 3.0mm crochet hook - used for the finer DK weight yarn elements
- 4.0mm crochet hook - used for the Aran weight yarn base (this hook size with Stitch Nation's Bamboo Ewe achieves the correct gauge)
- Stitch marker or contrasting yarn - essential for tracking the beginning of rounds in circular crochet
- Darning needle - used for weaving in yarn ends and assembling components
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to explore post stitches and multi-component assembly. The combination of the structured base with separate flower and leaf elements provides good skill-building opportunities.
