Product Description
An incredibly adorable hat with earflaps and a peaked crown that adds a bit of whimsy and warmth to every head. Knit in a soft washable wool, you'll never want to take it off! Pattern includes sizes ranging from baby to an adult large. I found 5mm buttons to be the perfect size for the owl eyes - but they can be tricky to find. Check online sites that specialize in materials for making doll clothes.
Skills needed: provisional cast-on, knitting in the round, cables, icord, ability to follow a pattern and chart.
Note: Many thanks to Kate Davies for her owls sweater which introduced me to this wonderful little cable motif and without which there would be no Flappy Hat. Be sure to check out her sweater - it is a great knit!
Flappy Hat by Studio Avenue Six
What is Being Made
The Flappy Hat is a knitted hat design available in six sizes: Baby, Toddler, Child, and Adult S, M, and L. The finished circumferences range from 15 1/2 inches for the Baby size to 24 inches for the Adult L size. This is a structured, fitted hat that features a distinctive cable motif inspired by traditional owl sweater patterns, making it a charming and decorative accessory suitable for various age groups.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental techniques that build on basic knitting skills. The pattern begins with a provisional cast-on, which allows for a flexible foundation that can be picked up later in the construction process. The hat is worked in the round, a common method for creating seamless cylindrical garments like hats. The pattern incorporates decreases to shape the crown of the hat, using both k2tog (knit two together) and ssk (slip, slip, knit) decrease techniques to create a smooth, tapered finish at the top. The design features chart-based colorwork or stitch patterns, with separate charts provided for different size categories: one chart for Baby, Toddler, and Child sizes, and a different chart for all Adult sizes. The pattern repeats a cable motif around the circumference of the hat, creating visual interest and texture throughout the piece.
Stitches Used
The Flappy Hat utilizes a combination of essential knitting stitches appropriate for an intermediate maker. The primary stitch is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic fabric base of the hat. This is combined with cable stitches that form the decorative owl motif pattern. The pattern uses knit stitches (k) and purl stitches as foundational elements, along with the aforementioned decrease stitches (k2tog and ssk) for shaping. The cable motif repeats around the hat in a circular pattern, with the chart indicating the specific placement and construction of these decorative elements.
Materials and Tools
The Flappy Hat is designed to be knitted with 3-ply or 4-ply yarn, offering flexibility in yarn selection within this weight range. The pattern specifically suggests Studio Avenue Six Bellwether Sock yarn as an ideal choice for this project. Two needle sizes are required: size 3 needles and size 2 needles, with the larger size (size 3) used for the initial cast-on and gauge swatch. The recommended gauge is 26 stitches over 4 inches when worked in stockinette stitch on the larger needle size, measured after washing and blocking. This gauge specification ensures proper fit across all six size options. The pattern requires circular needles or double-pointed needles suitable for working in the round.
Additional Notes
This is a free, downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Studio Avenue Six. The pattern includes a thoughtful acknowledgment of the inspiration behind the design, crediting Kate Davies for introducing the designer to the cable owl motif through her sweater pattern. The Flappy Hat represents an intermediate-level project that would appeal to knitters looking to expand their skills with cable work and shaping techniques while creating a practical, wearable accessory.
