I have already knitted this charming little bear and he is now in our window delighting children who go past. Pattern was very easy to follow too!!
A cute knitted Firefighter bear. He is a variant on the doctor bear, designed following a request from a little boy who is mad about fire fighters. He stands at 26cm when knitted on 3.75mm needles and using double knit yarn.
Perfect for the child obsessed with firefighters.
The pattern uses the following terminology: Knit (K), Purl (P), Knit 2 together (K2tog), Purl 2 together (P2tog), Knit Front and Back (KFB) making it easy to follow. The pattern contains images to help with some instructions. The Bear is created in double knit but could easily be created in 4ply.
The Firefighter Bear is a knitted toy designed by Sam Pratt, standing 26cm in finished height. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a charming stuffed bear character dressed in firefighter attire, complete with functional button details and safety eyes for a finished plush toy suitable for children or collectors.
The bear is constructed using an efficient one-piece knitting technique where the legs, body, and head are worked continuously from a single cast-on, minimizing seaming and creating a seamless integrated structure. This approach reduces finishing work while maintaining structural integrity throughout the toy.
This project employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters:
The Firefighter Bear requires DK weight yarn in multiple colors to create the character and costume details. The yarn palette includes 25g of black DK for accents, 50g each of yellow DK and navy DK for the firefighter uniform components, and 50g of brown DK for the bear's body. Small quantities of grey and white DK add fine details. Construction uses 3.75mm needles, which are sized to achieve the specified tension of 22 stitches and 17 rows over a 10cm x 10cm gauge in stocking stitch.
Beyond yarn and needles, the project requires a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming sections. Six buttons provide functional and decorative elements representing firefighter uniform details. Safety eyes create the bear's facial features, and polyester stuffing fills the completed knitted pieces to create the three-dimensional toy form.
Rated as an intermediate project, the Firefighter Bear assumes knitters have mastered basic cast-on, knit, and purl stitches, and are comfortable working with increases and decreases. The one-piece construction method and color work integration require attention to pattern following and stitch counting, making it suitable for knitters progressing beyond beginner projects.
