Product Description
Fíniúin means vine. Vine like cables encircle this hat.
This hat is worked in the round from the bottom up. The cables in the main colour grow from the two by two rib and intertwine around the hat. The contrast colour combines with the main colour in a garter stitch background. The hat appears quite complicated but in fact only one colour is worked per round as the cable stitches are slipped on contrast colour rows.

Fíniúin Hat by Ciara Ní Reachtnín
What is Being Made
The Fíniúin Hat is a hand-knitted hat designed by Ciara Ní Reachtnín. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a decorative hat worked in the round from the bottom up, featuring intertwining cable motifs in two contrasting colors. The design uses hand-dyed Arran yarn in a primary color with a contrasting color accent, creating a sophisticated finished piece suitable for various occasions.
Knitting Techniques Used
This hat employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance:
- Working in the round: The hat is constructed circularly from the bottom edge upward, eliminating the need for seaming
- Cable stitches: Decorative cables grow organically from the two-by-two rib foundation and intertwine around the circumference of the hat, creating visual interest and texture
- Slip stitches: Cable stitches are strategically slipped on contrast color rows, allowing the designer to work only one color per round despite the two-color appearance
- Garter stitch: The contrast color combines with the main color in garter stitch sections, forming the background fabric
- Ribbed cuff: A two-by-two rib foundation anchors the design at the hat's base
Stitches Used
The Fíniúin Hat incorporates the following essential stitches:
- Two-by-two rib (2x2 rib): Creates the structured cuff and serves as the foundation from which cables emerge
- Cable stitches: Form the primary decorative element, with cables that intertwine as they progress up the hat
- Garter stitch: Provides the textured background in the contrast color sections
- Stockinette stitch: Used as the reference gauge measurement for sizing accuracy
Materials and Tools
The Fíniúin Hat is worked using Arran weight yarn, specifically hand-dyed yarn from An Irish Knit Odyssey. The yarn composition is 100% wool, with each 50-gram skein providing 88 yards (80 meters) of yardage. The pattern requires two 50-gram skeins total: one skein in the main color (available in blue) and one skein in the contrast color (available in pink).
Knitting is performed on 4.5 millimeter needles (US size 7), which are sized to achieve the correct gauge of 16 stitches by 16 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inch square) when working in stockinette stitch and blocking the finished fabric. Circular needles are required for working the hat in the round.
Sizing Information
The Fíniúin Hat pattern provides instructions for three sizes: small, medium, and large. The small and medium sizes require one skein each of the main and contrast colors (1 ball each), while the large size requires two skeins of each color (2 balls each). The kit format contains sufficient yardage for small or medium sizes only.
Design Complexity
Although the Fíniúin Hat appears visually complex with its intertwining cables and two-color design, the construction method is cleverly simplified. By slipping cable stitches on contrast color rows, only one color is actively worked per round, making the project more manageable than its appearance suggests. This intermediate-level design is suitable for knitters with experience in cable work and two-color knitting techniques.
