Product Description
This is a fancy frilly sock worked up in a yarn with a decided un-fancy name. SugarbeeStudios MCN yarn is delicious and rich and despite (or because of?) the un-PC name, Toe Curling 'O' is the colorway that everyone loves best.
This sock is worked top down magic loop style with a heel flap. It is offered in 64 and 72-stitch counts, with written and charted instructions for the lovely lace pattern.
Note: In the 64 st version there is a double yarnover on certain rows of the lace pattern. If you don't like the larger hole that the double yo makes, you can fix it as follows: Work only a single yarnover instead. When you come back around to that row, knit into the front and the back of that yarnover, bringing the st count back up.
Sample is shown in Sugarbee Studios Politically Incorrect MCN Sock. A suggested substitute is shown below.
Finery Socks by Corrina Ferguson
Project Overview
Finery Socks is an intermediate-level knitted sock pattern designed by Corrina Ferguson. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a pair of fitted socks using the circular knitting method. The pattern is offered in two sizes—small/medium (S/M) and medium/large (M/L)—to accommodate different foot dimensions, with the S/M measuring approximately 8.5 inches unstretched and the M/L measuring about 9.25 inches unstretched.
Craft and Technique
Finery Socks is constructed using the knitting craft, worked in the round on circular needles. This construction method creates seamless socks with continuous spiral knitting, which is a hallmark technique for sock production. The pattern incorporates several fundamental and decorative knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters who have experience with circular needle work and basic stitch manipulation.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
The pattern employs a variety of essential knitting stitches and techniques:
- Stockinette stitch – the primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit and purl rows
- Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches – foundational stitches that form the base of the sock fabric
- Yarn overs (yo) – used to create decorative openings and lace elements within the sock design
- Double yarn-overs – featured in the 64-stitch version for enhanced lace patterning
- Knit front and back (kfb) – an increase technique for shaping
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease stitch
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease stitch created by slipping two stitches knitwise individually to the right needle, then inserting the left needle into the front of both stitches and knitting them together
- Purl 2 together (p2tog) – a decrease worked on the purl side
- Slip stitch (sl1) – used for edge finishing and stitch manipulation
Materials and Gauge
The Finery Socks pattern calls for 100 grams of 4-ply weight yarn, with the sample project using Sugarbee Studios Politically Incorrect MCN Sock yarn in the colorway Toe Curling Orgasm, which provides 435 yards of yardage. This yardage is sufficient for completing a pair of socks in either size.
Needles required include Size Two (3.0mm) 40-inch Addi circular needles, which are appropriately sized for the 4-ply yarn weight and allow for comfortable in-the-round knitting. A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the completed socks.
The recommended gauge is approximately 30 stitches and 40 rows per 4 inches when worked in stockinette stitch in the round. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the finished socks fit correctly and maintain the intended dimensions across both size options.
Pattern Structure and Sizing
The pattern provides clear sizing information with S/M stitch counts listed first and M/L sizes shown in parentheses throughout the instructions. This dual-sizing approach allows knitters to select their preferred size and follow the corresponding stitch counts without confusion. The pattern accommodates different foot circumferences while maintaining consistent construction techniques across both sizes.
