Fields Triangular Shawl by Dejana Knezevic

What Is Being Made

Fields is a triangular textured shawl designed as a practical, warm, and visually engaging knitted accessory. The finished shawl measures 36cm (14.4 inches) in depth from neck to peak at the center, with a flat wingspan of 150cm (60 inches) when spread completely. This generous sizing makes it suitable for layering over shoulders or wearing as a traditional triangular wrap.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Fields shawl employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for advanced beginner to intermediate-level knitters. The pattern utilizes stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base, combined with textured stitching to create visual interest and dimension. The design incorporates slip stitches and knit through the back loop techniques to build the textured pattern elements. The shawl is constructed using the two-needle circular method, which allows for the triangular shape to develop progressively from the cast-on edge through systematic increases and stitch manipulations.

Stitches and Pattern Structure

The pattern uses essential knitting abbreviations including knit (k), purl (p), slip stitch (sl st), and knit through the back loop (k tbl). The stitch work is presented in two formats for knitter preference: row-by-row written instructions in English and a charted pattern. This dual-format approach accommodates different learning styles and allows knitters to follow either detailed written guidance or visual chart representation. The textured pattern is intuitive and designed to be easy to remember once established, reducing the need for constant pattern reference during knitting.

Yarn and Needle Requirements

The Fields shawl is worked with DK or sport weight yarn, totaling approximately 560 meters or 614 yards (200 grams) across the entire project. The sample shown in the pattern was created using 2 balls of Alize Superlana Klasik Batik in colorway 6060, with each ball containing 280 meters or 307 yards per 100 grams. Knitters are encouraged to experiment with any colorful or solid-color yarn in the appropriate weight range.

The pattern requires US 7 (4.5mm) circular needles in a set of two needles, with one cord measuring either 24 or 32 inches (60 or 80 centimeters) in length. The recommended gauge is 19 stitches and 24 rows over 10 by 10 centimeters (4 by 4 inches) in stockinette stitch when worked on 4.5mm/US 7 needles. Notably, the pattern indicates that precise gauge matching is irrelevant for this project, making it forgiving for knitters with slight tension variations.

Difficulty Level and Skill Requirements

Fields is classified as an intermediate-level knitting project, suitable for advanced beginners who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with charts and textured stitch patterns. The intuitive, easy-to-remember pattern structure supports skill development without overwhelming complexity, making it an excellent choice for knitters progressing beyond fundamental techniques.
