Fielder T-Shirt in Viking Garn – Children's Knitting Pattern (UK-2324-5)

The Fielder T-Shirt is a charming children's knitted top designed by Turid Stapnes and published by Viking of Norway. Available as a downloadable PDF, this intermediate-level knitting pattern produces a lightweight, short-sleeved raglan T-shirt worked in a soft bamboo-cotton blend yarn. It is sized for children aged 2 through 12 years, with five size options covering chest circumferences from 58 cm to 87 cm (approximately 22¾ to 34¼ inches), making it a versatile wardrobe staple for growing children.

What Is Being Made

The finished garment is a children's short-sleeved T-shirt with a raglan yoke construction and a neat ribbed neckband. The whole length of the finished piece ranges from 36 cm to 58 cm depending on size, and the short sleeves measure between 12 cm and 16 cm in length. The design features a decorative panel at the centre front referenced as Diagram A, which aligns carefully with the neckband ribbing for a polished finish. The overall silhouette is clean and classic, making it ideal for warm-weather or layering wear.

Construction Technique

The Fielder T-Shirt is constructed using a top-down or seamless raglan method, a popular technique in which the body and sleeves are shaped simultaneously by working decreases at four raglan join points on every round. This approach creates smooth, diagonal raglan lines across the shoulders and yoke without the need for complex seaming. The knitter works decrease rounds repeatedly until the correct stitch count is achieved — between 72 and 84 stitches in the round — and completes between 15 and 27 raglan decrease rounds depending on the size being knitted. Once the yoke shaping is complete, any underarm gaps are closed by sewing the small holes left beneath the sleeves, and all loose ends are neatly woven in on the wrong side.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Raglan decreases worked at all four join points simultaneously on every round to shape the yoke
  • Knitting in the round for seamless construction of the body and yoke
  • Knit 2, Purl 2 (k2, p2) ribbing for the neckband, carefully aligned with the centre front panel and Diagram A
  • Diagram A – a charted stitch pattern worked across the 14 centre front stitches, adding visual interest to the front of the T-shirt
  • Casting off loosely in pattern to ensure the neckband remains flexible and comfortable for a child to wear
  • Finishing techniques including sewing underarm holes closed and weaving in ends on the wrong side for a neat, professional result

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for Viking Bamboo yarn, a 6-ply weight yarn composed of 50% bamboo and 50% cotton, sold in 50 g skeins. This fibre blend is particularly well suited to a children's summer T-shirt, as bamboo adds a natural softness and subtle sheen while cotton provides breathability and structure. The colourway specified in the pattern is Royal Blue no. 625, requiring between 5 and 7 skeins depending on the size. The recommended needle size is 2.5 mm, with a switch to 2.5 mm needles also noted for the neckband ribbing section. The relatively fine needle size and yarn weight produce a close, smooth fabric with good stitch definition, ideal for showcasing the centre front chart detail.
