Product Description

High above the New River in Fayette County, West Virginia soars a very long single-span bridge. The beauty of the bridge is in the symmetry of the crisscrossing steel girders and beams that hold the bridge aloft. This symmetry is reflected in the graphic lines of this scarf.

Gauge is not critical to this project but will affect the finished size of the scarf. The length of the scarf can be adjusted by knitting more repeats of the chart.

Fayette Scarf by Steven Hicks

Project Overview

The Fayette Scarf is an advanced knitting pattern inspired by the architectural beauty of a long single-span bridge soaring above the New River in Fayette County, West Virginia. The design captures the symmetry of the bridge's crisscrossing steel girders and beams through graphic lines rendered in knitted fabric. This downloadable PDF pattern is offered free by designer Steven Hicks and is suitable for experienced knitters seeking a project with visual complexity and structural interest.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a rectangular scarf with finished measurements of 11 inches wide by 58 inches long (28 cm x 147.5 cm) when blocked. The scarf's length can be customized by knitting additional repeats of the charted pattern, allowing makers to adjust the finished size according to personal preference. The design emphasizes symmetrical patterning that echoes architectural elements.

Knitting Techniques

The Fayette Scarf employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques that contribute to its sophisticated appearance. The pattern utilizes charted instructions that guide the placement of pattern repeats, allowing knitters to create the geometric, symmetrical design. Gauge is noted as not critical to the project, though it will affect the final dimensions of the finished scarf. This flexibility makes the pattern more accessible while still maintaining the integrity of the design.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k): The fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
  • Purl (p): Used in combination with knit stitches to create textural and visual variation
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease stitch that reduces stitch count and creates shaping or pattern definition
  • Slip, slip, knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease stitch created by slipping 2 stitches knitwise and then knitting them together, providing balanced decreases
  • Slip 1 with yarn in front (s1 wyif): A slipped stitch technique that creates clean edges and is often used in pattern work
  • Stockinette stitch: The primary fabric base, created by alternating knit and purl rows, which provides a smooth, classic canvas for the pattern work

Materials and Tools

The Fayette Scarf requires 700 yards (640 meters) of fingering weight yarn, which is a 4-ply yarn weight offering fine detail and drape. Knitters will need US #5 (3.75mm) needles to work with this yarn weight at the specified gauge. Additional tools include a cable needle for any cable or crossed-stitch techniques incorporated into the pattern, and a darning needle for weaving in ends upon completion.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 25 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch. While gauge is noted as not critical to the success of this project, working to the specified gauge will produce the finished measurements of 11 inches by 58 inches. Knitters who work at a tighter or looser gauge will achieve a proportionally smaller or larger scarf, and the length can be extended by knitting additional pattern repeats beyond those specified in the original instructions.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is classified as advanced, making it well-suited for experienced knitters who are comfortable reading charts, executing decreases, and managing pattern repeats with precision. The combination of charted patterning, multiple decrease techniques, and the need to maintain symmetry throughout the project requires strong foundational knitting skills and attention to detail.
