Product Description
I had so much fun making this hat! This version uses nine colors of Jojoland Baritone. This is a light worsted/heavy dk wool in yummy colors. You can use less colors, if you choose. It's easy to knit and is great for practicing fair isle knitting. There is no chart, all rounds are written out.
This hat fits a large child through an adult (up to 23" head circumference). I am available for knitting help through e-mail.
Fair Isle Earflap Cap by Sharon Mooney
What Is Being Made
The Fair Isle Earflap Cap is a knitted hat designed to fit head circumferences of 21" to 23", making it suitable for large children through adults. This downloadable PDF pattern (K199) features a traditional Fair Isle colorwork design combined with practical earflaps, creating a warm and visually striking winter accessory.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using the knitting craft. The primary technique featured is Fair Isle colorwork, a traditional method of knitting with multiple colors in a single row to create intricate patterned designs. Fair Isle knitting involves carrying unused yarn colors inside the fabric while working with the active color, resulting in a reversible pattern with excellent insulation properties. The earflap construction adds functional warmth and coverage for the ears.
Stitches and Construction Methods
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern excerpt, Fair Isle projects typically employ fundamental knitting stitches including knit and purl stitches worked in the round. The cap is constructed using circular knitting needles for the main body, transitioning to double pointed needles as the crown decreases toward completion. The earflaps are likely worked flat or in the round and then attached to the finished cap. Stitch markers are used to denote pattern repeats and construction points, while stitch holders secure stitches during construction.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern calls for nine skeins of Jojoland "Baritone" yarn, each skein containing 110 yards and weighing 1.76 ounces. The yarn is 100% wool in DK weight (light worsted), providing excellent elasticity and warmth. The nine colors used are:
- Color 205 (A)
- Color 244 (B)
- Color 266 (C)
- Color 269 (D)
- Color 315 (E)
- Color 307 (F)
- Color 309 (G)
- Color 305 (H)
- Color 428 (I)
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires US size 7 circular knitting needles in a 16" length for working the main cap body in the round, and a set of four US size 7 double pointed needles for decreasing at the crown. Additional tools include two medium stitch holders for managing stitches during construction, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming components together.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle colorwork techniques. Fair Isle knitting requires comfort with managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously and maintaining even tension across color changes, skills that distinguish this project from beginner-level patterns.
