Product Description
The elaborate panel is the main feature on this lovely design. The panel itself consists of vertical bands of chevron eyelets, slanting leaves and a cental “shell” motif. The varying row tension of the centre shell causes the lower edge on the front to form a prettty, slightly wavy edge. I designed the back to be simple so it is worked all in stocking stich - however, you could work the back exactly as the front of you prefer. The underarm shaping gives a semi-dolman effect and makes a comfy dropped shoulder.

Faded Roses Knitted Top by Pat Menchini
What is Being Made
Faded Roses is an intermediate-level knitted top designed by Pat Menchini. This garment is available in six sizes to fit bust measurements ranging from 76-81 cm (30-32 inches) up to 127-132 cm (50-52 inches). The finished length to the top of the shoulder measures approximately 60 cm (23½ inches) for the smaller sizes, increasing to 66 cm (26 inches) for the larger sizes. The underarm measurement before sleeve shaping ranges from 76 cm (30 inches) in the smallest size to 127 cm (50 inches) in the largest size.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This project employs stockinette stitch as the primary stitch pattern, creating a smooth, classic fabric suitable for an intermediate knitter. The pattern requires working with two different needle sizes to achieve proper tension and construction: smaller needles are used for ribbed sections, while larger needles are used for the main body. The design incorporates sleeve shaping, indicating that the top features fitted sleeves that taper from the underarm. Stitch holders are used during construction, suggesting the pattern involves techniques such as setting aside stitches for neckline finishing or other design elements.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Yarn: Stylecraft Bellissima DK in shade Ash Rose 3925. This yarn is a DK weight (light worsted), providing a versatile medium thickness suitable for structured garments. Each 100g ball contains 268 metres or 293 yards of yarn.
Yarn Quantity Required:
- Sizes 76-81 cm and 86-91 cm: 3 balls
- Sizes 97-102 cm: 4 balls
- Sizes 107-112 cm: 4 balls
- Sizes 117-122 cm: 5 balls
- Sizes 127-132 cm: 5 balls
Needles and Notions: The pattern requires two pairs of knitting needles—3.25 mm (UK size 10, US size 3) and 4 mm (UK size 8, US size 6). Additionally, two stitch holders are needed for managing stitches during construction.
Tension Information
The correct tension for this project is 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over stockinette stitch using the 4 mm needles. Achieving the correct tension is essential before beginning the project, as it directly affects the finished measurements and fit of the garment. If your tension is too loose, switch to finer needles; if too tight, use larger needles.
Skill Level
This top is rated as an intermediate project, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to work with shaping, multiple needle sizes, and more structured garment construction.
