Product Description

A semicircular lace shawl on the theme of change as a positive necessity, with flowing and evolving layers of lace and just enough texture to be interesting.

Suits advanced knitters, with a similar skill level and feel to Don’t Panic.

The pattern can be worked entirely from written directions, or charts with some notes.

WS rows are mostly purl with a bit of knit, but no lacey business.

The design has a wedge shaped construction forming a half circle, and the pattern includes instructions for adding extra wedges.

Evoluta Lace Shawl by Nim Teasdale

What is Being Made

Evoluta is a semicircular lace shawl designed by independent knitter Nim Teasdale. This advanced knitting pattern features flowing and evolving layers of lace with subtle textural elements throughout. The shawl is constructed with flexibility in mind, offering multiple finishing options and the ability to customize the final size based on available yarn quantity.

Design Features and Construction

The shawl showcases layered lace construction that evolves as you work through the pattern. Rather than a simple geometric shape, Evoluta incorporates design elements that reflect the theme of natural growth and change. The pattern was originally released as a MKAL (Mystery Knit-Along) presented in six parts, with each section building upon the previous to create the complete semicircular form.

The design philosophy emphasizes change as a positive and natural aspect of life, drawing inspiration from biological cycles of growth and transformation. This conceptual approach informs the visual progression of the lace layers throughout the shawl.

Pattern Flexibility and Finishing Options

Evoluta offers several customization possibilities for knitters:

  • Multiple possible endings to suit different preferences
  • A repeatable final edging that allows you to use remaining yarn efficiently
  • The option to add extra wedges for a larger shawl than the standard semicircle, provided you have sufficient yardage

Yardage Requirements

This pattern accommodates a wide range of yarn quantities, suiting 600–1450 meters (650–1600 yards) of lace to fingering weight yarn. The sample shown used 590 meters (645 yards) of Blue Brick Point Pelee Lace yarn, demonstrating the lower end of the yardage range.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

As an advanced-level knitting pattern, Evoluta employs lace knitting techniques throughout. Lace knitting combines yarn overs and decreases to create openwork patterns with both decorative and structural purpose. The shawl's evolving layers are built using these fundamental lace stitches, with textural elements added to create visual interest beyond the lace alone.

The pattern requires competency with reading complex stitch patterns, managing yarn overs and their paired decreases, and maintaining gauge consistency across the multiple sections of the design.

Materials and Needles

Evoluta is worked with 3mm and 3.25mm (US size 2.5 and 3) knitting needles, as demonstrated in the sample. Needle size should be adjusted to suit your specific yarn choice and preferred gauge. The pattern works with 3-ply, 4-ply, cobweb, and lace weight yarns, offering flexibility for different fiber types and yarn structures within these weight categories.

The Blue Brick Point Pelee Lace used in the sample showcases how a quality lace-weight yarn enhances the visual impact of the layered lace construction.
