Product Description
The first time I touched Bare Naked Wools 'Confection' I knew two things: 1) I wanted to wrap myself in the yarn and 2) it would be a dream to knit. The natural colours of the yarn made choosing just one difficult so I selected two shades of grey and the natural, figuring I’d come up with a pattern later. After finishing the cowl and hat, there was still a generous amount of yarn left and I designed these fingerless gloves with a gusseted thumb. The main lace pattern is used on the cuffs with a decorative element used on the back of the hands.
Pattern has both written and charted instructions.
Skills Required: • Lace • Working in the round • Increasing and decreasing • Following charts • Blocking
Yarn: 80 (100, 130) yards/73 (91.5, 119) meters of merino/wool worsted weight yarn that knits up to 3.75-4.5 sts/inch.
Every Which Way Fingerless Mitts by Janelle Martin
What Is Being Made
Every Which Way Fingerless Mitts are a pair of fingerless gloves designed by Janelle Martin. These mitts feature a gusseted thumb construction and are available in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. The mitts fit hand circumferences ranging from 7 inches to 8.5 inches at the knuckles, with lengths between 5.84 inches and 6.3 inches depending on size selection. The design incorporates both functional warmth for the hands and wrists while leaving fingers free for dexterity and tactile tasks.
Techniques Used
The fingerless mitts employ several key knitting techniques to create their finished structure. A gusseted thumb construction provides a custom fit and comfortable wear around the thumb area. The pattern utilizes a main lace pattern featured on the cuffs, creating an elegant openwork detail. A decorative element adorns the back of the hands, adding visual interest to the finished piece. The combination of these techniques demonstrates intermediate to advanced beginner skill level construction, making this pattern suitable for knitters with some experience.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st st) – The primary stitch used throughout the mitts, providing a smooth, classic fabric base
- Lace Pattern – Featured on the cuffs for an openwork, decorative effect
- Decorative Stitch Elements – Applied to the back of the hands for additional visual detail
Materials and Tools
These fingerless mitts are designed to be knitted using worsted weight yarn, specifically inspired by Bare Naked Wools 'Confection' yarn in multiple colorways. The pattern accommodates two to three yarn colors, with the original design using two shades of grey plus a natural shade. Knitters will need two US #7/4.5 mm circular needles measuring 16 inches (40 cm) or the appropriate size to achieve the specified gauge. The pattern requires a gauge of 18.5 stitches and 25.5 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch using the larger needles, measured unblocked.
Skill Level and Pattern Details
Rated as Advanced Beginner difficulty, this knitting pattern is accessible to intermediate knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle lace patterns and shaping elements. The downloadable PDF format from Eclectic Closet provides complete instructions for creating this versatile accessory that works as a standalone project or as a complementary piece to coordinate with other garments in a coordinated set.
