Product Description
“Etude” is a pullover with an undulating lace pattern on the yoke, A-line body and slightly oversized sleeves.
It is worked from the top down seamlessly. After some short rows, the yoke is worked in the round with Etude pattern, and the lower body is knit in one piece in the round with A-line shaping. Finally, sleeves stitches, set aside at the underarm, are worked down straight in the round.
Etude Pullover by Ririko
What is Being Made
Etude is a knitted pullover sweater designed by Ririko, featuring a sophisticated silhouette with an undulating lace pattern concentrated on the yoke. The garment combines a fitted upper body with an A-line construction that gradually widens toward the hem, paired with slightly oversized sleeves for a contemporary, relaxed fit. This design is available in eight sizes ranging from XS to 3XL, with finished bust circumferences from 33½ inches (85 cm) to 51¾ inches (131.5 cm).
Garment Construction and Fit
The Etude pullover is engineered for a modern, slightly loose wearing experience. The pattern suggests an ease of 0 to 15 centimeters (0 to 6 inches) at the bust, with the sample garment photographed with 7 centimeters (2¾ inches) of positive ease. The body length ranges from 11½ inches (29 cm) for smaller sizes to 13 inches (33 cm) for the largest sizes, creating a versatile length suitable for various body proportions. The A-line shaping begins at the underarm and gradually expands toward the hem, while the yoke features the signature undulating lace motif that adds visual interest and texture to the upper garment.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques. The construction utilizes circular needle knitting for seamless construction, a hallmark of modern sweater design. The undulating lace pattern on the yoke requires proficiency with yarn overs and decreases to create the openwork design. The A-line body shaping involves strategic increases worked at regular intervals to achieve the gradual widening effect. The slightly oversized sleeves are set in using standard armhole and cap shaping methods. The pattern is worked from the top down, a construction method that allows for easy fitting adjustments and eliminates the need for seaming.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The Etude pattern incorporates lace stitches as the primary decorative element on the yoke. Lace knitting requires the combination of yarn overs (which create the characteristic openwork holes) and corresponding decreases (knit two together, slip-slip-knit, or similar decrease methods) to maintain stitch count while creating the undulating pattern. The body and sleeves are worked in stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit stitch that creates a smooth, classic fabric. Ribbing is used at the neckline, cuffs, and hem to provide elasticity and a finished appearance. The pattern documentation indicates careful attention to stitch counts and row gauges to ensure proper fit across all eight size options.
Yarn and Materials
Etude is designed for fingering weight yarn, also known as 4-ply yarn, which creates a refined, drapable fabric suitable for lace work. The total yardage requirement ranges from approximately 980 meters (1072 yards) for the smallest size to 1620 meters (1772 yards) for the largest size. The sample garment shown in the pattern is knitted in Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light, a 100% merino wool yarn that offers softness, breathability, and excellent stitch definition for lace patterns. The sample requires 3 to 5 skeins depending on size, with each skein providing 384 meters (420 yards) of yarn. The pattern is worked on 3 millimeter (US 2½) circular needles for the ribbed sections and 3.25 millimeter (US 3) circular needles for the main body, with a 40-centimeter (16-inch) needle recommended for working the neckline ribbing. The use of merino wool provides natural elasticity, moisture-wicking properties, and a luxurious feel appropriate for a garment featuring decorative lace work.
Skill Level and Project Scope
Etude is classified as an intermediate knitting project, appropriate for knitters who have mastered basic knitting techniques and are ready to tackle lace patterns and garment shaping. The combination of lace work, seamless construction, and fitted shaping requires attention to detail and an understanding of how to read and follow stitch patterns. The comprehensive pattern documentation, which spans multiple pages, includes finished measurements for all eight sizes and detailed instructions for executing the undulating lace yoke, shaping the A-line body, and setting in the oversized sleeves. This project is suitable for knitters seeking to expand their skills beyond simple stockinette garments while creating a wearable, elegant sweater.
