Product Description
Ethan's Blanket is a woodland inspired design featuring stylised leaves, vines, tree trunks and flowers. It is written for the motifs to have the same row count to allow for easier reading of the patterns. The pattern is both written and charted. It has also been tested. The sample was knit in 1 skein of Skein Queen Sonsie but it took every last bit of the skein. A blockable yarn is best to use due to the different tensions across motifs.

Project Overview
Ethan's Blanket is an intermediate-level knitted throw designed by independent designer Auroraknit. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a sophisticated blanket featuring multiple integrated stitch motifs arranged symmetrically across the fabric. The blanket combines decorative cable, flower, vine, and leaf motifs with a structured bottom border, making it an engaging project for knitters with foundational skills seeking to expand their stitch repertoire.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a rectangular blanket available in three finished sizes to suit different spaces and preferences. The smallest option measures 54x66cm, the medium size is 70x98cm, and the largest reaches 84x115cm. The blanket features a coordinated design with multiple textured motifs arranged in a symmetrical layout, creating visual interest through varied stitch patterns rather than color work.
Materials Required
- Yarn: DK weight yarn in quantities of 540m (smallest size), 1050m (medium size), or 1450m (largest size). The yarn must contain wool or possess blockable properties to allow tension differences across the various motifs to even out during finishing.
- Needles: 3.75mm needles suitable for DK weight yarn
- Sample Yarn: The pattern sample was worked in DK Skein Queen Oosie
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The blanket employs a modular motif approach where distinct stitch patterns are worked simultaneously across the fabric width. The pattern uses placed markers to separate and define each motif section, allowing knitters to work multiple pattern repeats in tandem. The construction begins with a bottom border worked across all stitches, followed by setup rows that establish the placement of each motif. This structured approach requires knitters to track multiple stitch patterns concurrently, making it suitable for intermediate-level crafters comfortable with pattern reading and stitch management.
Stitches and Motifs Used
The blanket incorporates four primary motif types, each with distinct stitch characteristics and widths when blocked:
- Cable Motif: Begins at 11 stitches, increases to 12 stitches on the first row, then decreases back to 11 stitches on the final row of the blanket. When blocked, this motif measures 5cm in width.
- Flower Motif: A central decorative element with stitch counts that vary across different rows. This motif blocks to a width of 9cm.
- Climbing Vines Motif: A textural element that blocks to 8cm in width, contributing flowing visual interest to the design.
- Leaf Motif: Positioned strategically within the blanket layout, this motif blocks to 7cm in width.
Tension and Finishing
The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 33 rows over 10cm once the completed blanket has been blocked. Blocking is essential to this project, as the different motifs may have varying natural tensions. The blockable yarn properties allow these tension differences to even out during the blocking process, resulting in a finished blanket with consistent fabric appearance and proper dimensions. The pattern includes a bottom border worked across all sizes, with setup rows establishing marker placement for each motif section.
Pattern Format and Guidance
This is a downloadable PDF pattern that includes detailed abbreviations and instructions for reading each motif section. The pattern notes recommend reading through each section to understand motif placement before beginning work. Cast-on instructions specify different stitch counts for each size (119, 153, or 185 stitches), with setup rows establishing the marker positions that guide motif placement throughout the project.
