Elli Octopus Crochet Pattern by Denise Karg alias Fräulein Wollwunder – Free Downloadable PDF
This free, beginner-friendly crochet pattern by Denise Karg alias Fräulein Wollwunder, published by Schachenmayr under design code S10835, guides crafters through creating Elli Octopus, an impressively large and wonderfully tactile stuffed octopus toy. Standing at a striking 95 cm tall, Elli is a showstopping amigurumi-style project that makes an eye-catching decorative piece or a cuddly companion for older children and adults. Please note that the finished toy is not suitable for children under 3 years of age.
What Is Being Made
Elli Octopus is a large crocheted stuffed toy octopus worked in the round. Her generous size — nearly a metre in height — is achieved through the use of chunky velvet yarn, which gives the finished piece an irresistibly soft, plush texture. The design incorporates a rounded body, flowing tentacles, and simple crocheted eyes worked in a contrasting dark colour, resulting in a charming and expressive character. The combination of a lush velvet yarn for the body and a finer cotton yarn for the eyes gives Elli both visual contrast and tactile interest.
Yarn and Materials
- Schachenmayr Luxury Velvet (100 g skein, approx. 75 m per 100 g) — a chunky-weight velvet yarn used for the main body and tentacles:
- Colour 00030 (cherry) — 3 skeins
- Colour 00035 (rose) — 1 skein
- Schachenmayr Catania (50 g skein, approx. 125 m per 50 g) — a sport-weight cotton yarn used for the eyes:
- Colour 00110 (schwarz / black) — 1 skein
- A crochet hook appropriate for the yarn weights used (as specified in the pattern PDF)
- Stitch markers to track the beginning of each round in spiral crochet
- Toy stuffing / fibrefill to fill the body and tentacles
Techniques Used
- Crocheting in the round — the entire project is constructed using circular rounds, a fundamental technique in amigurumi and toy making that creates seamless, three-dimensional shapes
- Spiral rounds — rather than closing each round with a slip stitch, rounds flow continuously into one another in a spiral. The first stitch of each new round is worked directly into the first stitch of the previous round, creating a smooth, uninterrupted surface without a visible join line. Stitch markers are recommended to keep track of round beginnings
- Working into chain stitches — the pattern begins with 2 chain stitches, with subsequent stitches worked into the second chain from the hook, a standard technique for starting a crochet round
- Increases (1 M verdoppeln) — two stitches are worked into the same stitch to widen and shape sections of the toy
- Decreases (1 M abnehmen) — two stitches are crocheted together to reduce stitch count and shape the body
- Bobble or popcorn stitches (Noppe) — a textural stitch technique referenced in the pattern to add decorative surface detail
- Stuffing as you go — as is typical with large amigurumi projects, fibrefill is added during construction to maintain shape
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (Luftmasche / Lm) — used at the start of the project
- Slip stitch (Kettmasche / Kettm) — referenced in the context of round closures (which are intentionally avoided in favour of spiral rounds)
- Single c
