Ellen ~ a Turtle~Neck~Lace Knit Pattern
What is Being Made
Ellen is a multifunctional accessory that combines the warmth of a turtleneck with the elegance of a lace cowl and decorative necklace element. Designed by Jessie Rayot, this piece serves as three garments in one, offering both practical neck warmth and fashionable styling. The pattern is sized for adult women as written, with detailed instructions provided for customizing the fit to any size.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This knit pattern incorporates lace work as a primary design element, creating an openwork aesthetic that balances visual interest with functional warmth. The pattern includes both knitting and crochet components, making it a hybrid technique project that adds textural variety to the finished piece. The lace construction allows for breathability while maintaining the structural integrity needed for a wearable cowl and necklace hybrid. Detailed photographic guidance is included throughout the pattern to support crafters in executing the techniques accurately.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the lace construction indicates the use of yarn overs, decreases, and other openwork stitches typical of lace knitting. The inclusion of crochet elements suggests the use of crochet chains, single crochet, or similar joining techniques to integrate the crochet portions with the knitted sections.
Yarn and Materials
Ellen is designed to be worked in Aran weight yarn, which provides sufficient structure for both the lace elements and the turtleneck functionality. The pattern notes that it can be adapted for different yarn weights and gauges, allowing crafters flexibility in material selection. Standard knitting needles and crochet hooks appropriate to the chosen yarn weight are required for completion.
Skill Level and Project Category
Rated as Beginner to Intermediate, this pattern is accessible to knitters with foundational skills while offering enough complexity to engage more experienced crafters. Ellen falls into multiple project categories including cowls, scarves, jewelry, and other accessories, reflecting its versatile nature as a wearable piece.
