Elephant Pinafore for Baby 0-3 Years – Knitted Design by Saskia Cole
What is Being Made
This is a knitted pinafore dress designed for babies aged 0-3 years, featuring a charming elephant motif. The pinafore is a sleeveless garment that pulls over the head and fastens at the sides with buttons, making it practical for layering over long-sleeved shirts or bodysuits. The design includes a bib-style top with button closures and is sized to fit chest measurements ranging from 41cm to 55cm, accommodating growth stages from newborn through 3 years old.
Garment Sizing and Fit
The pattern provides six graduated sizes to grow with your baby:
- 0-3 months: Chest 41cm (18"), full length 36cm (14")
- 3-6 months: Chest 43cm (19"), full length 38cm (15")
- 6-12 months: Chest 46cm (19¾"), full length 44cm (17¼")
- 12-18 months: Chest 48cm (20½"), full length 48cm (19")
- 18-24 months: Chest 50cm (21¼"), full length 52cm (20½")
- 2-3 years: Chest 55cm (23"), full length 58cm (23")
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs colorwork techniques to create the elephant motif. The pattern uses a main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC) approach, requiring knitters to manage two yarn colors throughout sections of the design. The elephant is integrated into the knitted fabric rather than appliquéd, making it a true colorwork piece. The instructions are provided for the smallest size with larger sizes given in brackets and color-coded by size for easy reference, a common technique for multi-size patterns.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern excerpt provided, the pinafore is constructed using fundamental knitting stitches appropriate to aran weight yarn. The garment features a structured bib top that buttons at the sides and a body section that creates the pinafore shape. The construction includes provisions for button bands and closures, indicating the use of ribbing or garter stitch edgings typical of baby garments.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This pattern calls for aran weight yarn (also known as worsted or 10 ply), specifically Rico Cotton Creative Aran. Yarn quantities vary by size:
- Main Color (MC) Denim: 3 balls for sizes 0-3m and 3-6m; 4 balls for sizes 6-12m, 12-18m, and 18-24m; 5 balls for size 2-3 years
- Contrast Color (CC) Grey: 1 ball for all sizes
Each ball contains 50g of yarn. The cotton composition makes this an excellent choice for warmer months or climates, offering breathability and durability for baby garments.
Tools and Notions
Knitters will need 5mm UK (US size 8) knitting needles to work with the aran weight yarn at the appropriate gauge. Additional supplies include:
- 1 sewing needle for seaming and finishing
- 9 x 12mm buttons for side closures and bib top fastening, plus one button for the elephant's eye detail
- 20cm of ribbon for decoration or functional finishing
Design Details
The elephant motif serves as the focal point of this pinafore, created through the integration of the contrast grey color against the denim main color. The button-side closure system allows caregivers to easily dress and undress the baby while keeping the garment secure during wear. The inclusion of a decorative button for the elephant's eye adds a charming finishing touch that brings personality to the design.
