Eight Pointed Flower Crochet Block by Julie Yeager

Project Overview

The Eight Pointed Flower is an intermediate-level crochet block pattern designed by Julie Yeager. This downloadable PDF provides complete instructions for creating a finished square measuring 9 inches, making it suitable for blankets, afghans, or other modular crochet projects. The design features a distinctive eight-pointed star formation created through strategic increases and color changes.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a single crochet block with an eight-pointed flower or star motif. The block is worked in the round from the center outward, building up layers to form the characteristic pointed design. The finished piece measures 9 inches square and can be used as a standalone decorative element or combined with other blocks for larger projects.

Crochet Techniques Used

  • Adjustable loop or chain foundation: The pattern offers flexibility in starting method, allowing crocheters to begin with either an adjustable loop or traditional chain ring
  • Double crochet stitches: The primary stitch throughout the pattern, worked in multiple rounds to build structure and dimension
  • Increases in spaces: Rather than working into the tops of stitches, increases are worked in the spaces between stitches, which creates the flower's distinctive shape
  • Clustered single crochet: A non-traditional technique where six single crochets are worked together by inserting the hook only into the first and last stitches of the group, creating decorative elements
  • Chains behind petals: An intermediate technique where chains are created behind completed petals and then worked into during subsequent rounds, adding depth and complexity to the design

Stitch Breakdown

Round 1: Ten double crochet stitches worked into the center ring or adjustable loop, establishing the foundation.

Round 2: Twenty double crochet stitches created by working two double crochets in each space between the previous round's stitches, doubling the stitch count.

Round 3: Forty double crochet stitches achieved by again working two double crochets in each space between stitches, doubling the count once more and beginning to form the pointed flower shape.

Subsequent rounds incorporate the specialized techniques of chained sections behind petals and clustered single crochet details to complete the eight-pointed design.

Materials and Tools

This pattern is worked with worsted weight or aran weight yarn, providing good stitch definition and a finished block of appropriate size. A 5.5 mm (US I) crochet hook is recommended, though the pattern accommodates different tension levels. The tutorial example uses three colors: Duckie, Eggplant, and Dusty Green, allowing for creative color combinations and contrast in the final design.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern requires familiarity with basic crochet stitches and comfort with reading pattern instructions. The two techniques highlighted as potentially challenging—the clustered single crochet method and the chained sections worked in subsequent rounds—require attention to detail but are well within reach for crocheters with foundational skills and some project experience.

Slightly disgruntled!!!!

Only tried one pattern so far and not quite finished yet. Have to keep referring to the conversion chart from American to English crochet terms.
