Eigg Wrap Sleeveless Jacket Knitting Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Eigg wrap is a versatile sleeveless knitted jacket designed by Laurimuks patterns. This open-front cardigan style garment functions as both a wrap and a structured sleeveless jacket, offering flexible styling options for layering. The design features an open front that allows for multiple closure methods, making it adaptable to different outfits and occasions. One side includes decorative fringe detailing for added visual appeal and texture.

Knitting Techniques

This pattern is worked flat and sideways, meaning you knit from one side to the other rather than working in the round from the top down. This construction method eliminates the need for seams, resulting in a cleaner, more professional finish. The sideways approach also allows for easier adjustments to length and width during the knitting process. The garment features an open front design that provides versatile closure options, whether worn as a traditional cardigan or as a wrap-style layer.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout the Eigg wrap is reverse stockinette stitch, which creates a textured, bumpy surface that showcases the yarn's characteristics beautifully. Reverse stockinette is achieved by purling on the right side and knitting on the wrong side, producing the characteristic purl bumps on the front of the fabric. A garter border frames the entire piece, worked on all edges to provide structure, definition, and a finished appearance. Garter stitch, created by knitting every row, produces horizontal ridges and adds stability to the garment's edges.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Eigg wrap is designed to be knitted with bulky weight yarn, specifically requiring between 550 and 950 yards (502 to 868 meters) depending on your chosen size. The sample garment shown in the pattern was created using King Cole Chunky Tweed, a bulky weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and drape. The recommended gauge is 14 stitches and 20 rows to 10 centimeters (4 inches) on 6mm (US10) knitting needles, which is essential to check before beginning your project to ensure proper fit and fabric characteristics.

Needles and Tools

  • 6mm (US10) long straight or circular knitting needles for the main body construction
  • 6mm (US10) short circular needles for finishing the armhole edges
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends

Sizing and Fit

The Eigg wrap is available in six sizes ranging from extra small to double extra large. Sizes are designed to fit bust measurements from 28 inches to 50 inches, accommodating a wide range of body types. Back width varies from 16 inches in the smallest size to 27 inches in the largest, while armhole width ranges from 8 to 11 inches. Length from shoulder ranges from 18 to 19 inches across the size range, providing consistent proportions throughout.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to garment construction. The straightforward stitch patterns, simple sideways construction, and lack of complex shaping make the Eigg wrap accessible to those developing their knitting skills while still producing a sophisticated, wearable garment.

Really simple pattern. Quick and easy to use up a stash. I am using king cole chunky tweed as recommended but will make again using aran for a lighter wrap
