The Easy Sampler Baby Blanket is a knitted throw designed for babies, combining multiple stitch patterns into one cohesive project. This intermediate-level blanket measures approximately 34 x 27 inches (86 x 69 cm) when complete, making it an ideal size for crib use or as a decorative throw. The design showcases different knitting techniques in distinct panels, allowing crafters to practice and master various stitches while creating a functional and beautiful finished piece.
This is a baby blanket constructed using the knitting method. The blanket features a sampler design, meaning it incorporates multiple different stitch patterns arranged in panels throughout the piece. The finished dimensions of approximately 34 x 27 inches make it appropriately sized for infant use, whether draped over a crib, pram, or used as a decorative blanket.
The Easy Sampler Baby Blanket employs several fundamental knitting techniques arranged in distinct panels:
These techniques combine to create a blanket with varied texture and visual appeal while remaining accessible to intermediate-level knitters.
The blanket requires approximately 200 grams (620 metres) of DK weight yarn. DK yarn, also known as double knitting weight, is a medium-weight yarn that works well for baby items, offering a good balance between drape and durability.
For needles, the pattern specifies 5 mm knitting needles (UK size, equivalent to US size 8). The designer recommends using 80 cm circular needles to accommodate all 117 cast-on stitches comfortably.
The tension (gauge) for this project is 17 stitches over 25 rows, measured over a 10 x 10 cm swatch. Achieving proper gauge is important for ensuring the finished blanket reaches the intended dimensions of 34 x 27 inches.
The blanket is constructed by casting on 117 stitches and working in panels, each featuring different stitch patterns. The pattern begins with 2 knit rows, followed by the first panel worked in seed stitch. After completing the first panel, knitters continue with additional panels such as the wide broken rib stitch. Each panel is separated and framed with garter stitch borders to create clear visual divisions and add structural integrity to the finished piece.
Rated as an intermediate project, this blanket is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with multiple stitch patterns in one project. The variety of techniques provides an excellent opportunity to build skills while creating a practical and beautiful baby gift. The sampler approach makes it an ideal learning project for those wanting to expand their stitch repertoire.
