Easy Pig Crochet Pattern by Kerri's Crochet
What Is Being Made
The Easy Pig is a beginner-friendly amigurumi-style crochet project designed to create a three-dimensional stuffed pig. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Kerri's Crochet provides complete instructions for constructing a cute pig figure, with accompanying video tutorial support available. The finished piece is suitable for crafters new to crochet techniques.
Craft and Technique Overview
This project uses crochet as the primary craft method. The pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques including the magic loop method for starting projects in the round, which creates a tight center point ideal for amigurumi construction. The design uses increasing and decreasing techniques to shape three-dimensional forms, a core skill in creating stuffed crochet animals.
Stitches Used
The Easy Pig pattern incorporates the following crochet stitches:
- Chain stitch (ch) – Used to create foundation chains and turning chains throughout the pattern
- Treble crochet (tr) – Used in the head construction for creating the initial circle and building height
- Double crochet (dc) – Used for shaping and detailing, particularly in row 3 of the head
- Half treble crochet (htr) – Listed in the abbreviations for use throughout the pattern
- Slip stitch (sl st) – Used to join rounds and finish off sections
Materials and Tools Required
The Easy Pig pattern calls for specific materials to complete the project:
- Yarn: Two shades of pink, white, and black crochet cotton or wool. The designer used 8 ply wool, which is classified as light worsted weight in the US and double knit (DK) in the UK. This yarn weight provides excellent stitch definition for small amigurumi projects.
- Crochet Hook: A 2.5mm hook, which pairs appropriately with DK weight yarn for tight, defined stitches
- Finishing Tools: Scissors, a sewing needle, and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends
- Assembly Materials: Sewing thread to stitch the completed pig pieces together
Pattern Structure
The pattern is organized by body sections, beginning with the head construction. Row 1 of the head uses the magic loop technique with 15 treble crochet stitches worked into the center, then pulled tight and joined with a slip stitch. Row 2 increases stitches by working 2 treble crochets into each stitch around the circle, creating expansion. Row 3 uses double crochet stitches with a strategic increase pattern (1 dc, 1 dc, 2 dc repeat) to continue shaping. The body section follows similar construction methods using the magic loop foundation.
Difficulty Level
Rated as beginner difficulty, this pattern is accessible to crocheters new to the craft. The straightforward stitch combinations, clear abbreviations, and video tutorial support make it an excellent introduction to amigurumi construction and three-dimensional crochet shaping.
