Product Description

The original snake was created as my way to respond to a challenge I received a while ago. It is not an easy project. To make this snake you have to be able to work intarsia and stranded colorwork. The stranded colorwork is done with all three colors. An easier alternative could be stranded colorwork in two colors and then add duplicate stitch for the third color. The snake is knitted flat, start at the tail's end, work to its head, and continue with the bottom part. Rattle is added at the end. You will need approximately 1 ball of each medium worsted yarn in brown, grey, off white for the top part of the snake and off white yarn with speckles for the bottom part. The pattern contains two charts, one for the upper body ad second for the head, as well as written instruction.

Eastern or Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Knitted Toy

What is Being Made

This is a knitted stuffed toy snake designed by Stana D. Sortor that replicates the appearance of either an Eastern or Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. The finished toy snake is approximately 5 feet 9 inches (175 centimeters) long, though the final length is customizable based on pattern repeats. The Eastern Diamondback variety grows between 5 to 6 feet in length, occasionally reaching 8 feet, while the Western Diamondback typically measures 3 to 5 feet, with occasional specimens reaching 7 feet. Each knitted snake features a unique diamondback pattern characteristic of these species.

Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level knitting project uses chart-based colorwork to create the distinctive diamond pattern found on real diamondback rattlesnakes. The pattern is worked by repeating a chart design multiple times—at least 3 to 4 repeats are recommended—allowing crafters to customize the final length of their toy snake. The construction method creates a three-dimensional stuffed toy suitable for display or play.

Stitches Used

While specific stitch details are not fully outlined in the available pattern information, the project employs colorwork knitting techniques to render the diamondback pattern through the use of a chart. This allows for the creation of the distinctive geometric diamond shapes that characterize these rattlesnake species.

Materials Required

The pattern calls for medium worsted weight yarn in four distinct colors:

  • Off-white color (suggested brands include Vanna's Choice Linen 099, Impeccable Aran 01008, or Red Heart Supersaver Aran 0313)
  • Dark grayish color (Vanna's Choice Charcoal Grey 151)
  • Brown color
  • An additional color for pattern variation

Crafters are encouraged to select their preferred yarn brands while maintaining the medium worsted weight specification. Standard knitting needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn are required to complete this project.
