Early Bloomer can be knit in any DK weight yarn, and the instructions include both a short and long sleeve option. The body length is slightly cropped (11 inches / 28 cm) but can easily be lengthened or shortened. Note that for every additional inch of length, you will need about 5% more MC yarn (relative to the amount for the short sleeved version given below).
It is knit from the top down, in one piece, beginning with a provisional cast on. The provisional stitches are picked up at the end, then the neck is shaped with short rows and the collar is finished in ribbing. Other than the short rows for the neck shaping, it is worked entirely in the round. Yoke shaping is done with increases during the colour-work, in addition to raglan increases following the colour-work.
Early Bloomer is a downloadable knitting pattern for a fitted sweater designed by Heidi Kirrmaier. This intermediate-level project is available in an extensive size range from XXS through 5X, with finished circumferences spanning from 79 cm (31 inches) to 168 cm (66¼ inches). The sweater is designed to be worn with 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) of positive ease for a close, flattering fit. The pattern includes detailed schematic measurements to help knitters select the most appropriate size for their desired fit.
Early Bloomer features a subtle asymmetrical construction where the front panel is slightly wider than the back. For sizes XXS through M2, the front measures 1–2 cm (½–¾ inch) wider than the back, while larger sizes (L2 through 5X) have a 3 cm (1 inch) width difference. This design detail adds visual interest and ensures a comfortable, body-conscious silhouette.
The pattern calls for DK weight yarn, with yardage requirements varying by size. The smallest size (XXS) requires approximately 450 meters of main color yarn for short sleeves, while the largest size (5X) needs 1,120 meters. The designer sample was worked in Magpie Fibres Solstice, a premium blend of 50% merino wool, 25% silk, and 25% cotton, offering both warmth and drape. The pattern uses two colors: a main color (shown in 'driftwood') and a contrasting color (shown in 'desert rose'), allowing for creative colorway customization.
As an intermediate-level knitting project, Early Bloomer employs standard knitting techniques suitable for knitters with foundational skills. The pattern utilizes DK weight yarn worked on appropriate needles for this yarn weight, creating a fabric with good stitch definition and drape. The inclusion of two colors suggests the use of stranded colorwork or similar color-change techniques to create the visual interest shown in the design.
