What Is Being Made

The Dylan Afghan is a versatile crocheted blanket and throw designed by Sincerely Pam. This project offers multiple sizing options ranging from a compact stroller blanket to a luxurious king-size throw, making it adaptable for various needs and spaces. The design is suitable for gifting, home décor, or personal use.

Available Sizes

  • Stroller: 30" wide × 40" long, approximately 950 yards
  • Baby: 36" wide × 36" long, approximately 970 yards
  • Throw: 52" wide × 60" long, approximately 1700 yards
  • Twin: 59" wide × 85" long, approximately 2930 yards (estimated)
  • Queen: 90" wide × 90" long, approximately 4200 yards (estimated)
  • King: 108" wide × 90" long, approximately 5100 yards (estimated)

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

The Dylan Afghan employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners. The pattern utilizes several core stitches and methods to create its structure:

  • Single Crochet (sc): A basic, tight stitch that forms the foundation of many sections
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc): A medium-height stitch that adds texture and drape
  • Chain (ch): The foundational stitch used to create the base and spaces throughout the pattern
  • Slip Stitch (slst): Used for joining rounds and connecting sections
  • Working in the 3rd Loop (W3L): A specialized technique that creates a distinctive textured ridge effect
  • Working in All 3 Loops (WAL): A standard method for creating solid, cohesive fabric

Materials Required

Yarn: The Dylan Afghan is worked in Worsted Weight yarn (also classified as #4 weight). The designer used Lion Brand Vanna's Choice for the original design. Yardage requirements vary significantly by size, from 950 yards for a stroller blanket to over 5100 yards for a king-size version.

Hook and Notions: An I (5.5 mm) crochet hook is used throughout the project. Additional supplies include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and a measuring tape for checking gauge and dimensions.

Difficulty Level

The Dylan Afghan is rated as a beginner-friendly project with an experience level marked as "Easy." The straightforward stitch combinations and repetitive pattern structure make this an ideal choice for newer crocheters looking to develop foundational skills while creating a substantial, finished piece.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 single crochet stitches equaling 4 inches. Checking gauge before beginning is important to ensure the finished afghan reaches the intended dimensions.

Color Planning

The Dylan Afghan pattern includes a color planning chart to help crafters determine the approximate number of repeats for each color section, allowing for creative customization and personalization of the finished blanket.
