What Is Being Made

Dyer's Delight is an advanced knitting pattern designed to showcase hand-dyed variegated yarn in a finished scarf. This project is specifically created for knitters who enjoy dyeing their own yarn using food-safe dyes and want to display multiple mini skeins of uniquely colored yarn in a single cohesive garment. The scarf measures approximately 25cm x 180cm and serves as an ideal showcase for displaying the color variations and pooling effects of custom-dyed fingering-weight yarn.

Techniques Used

The Dyer's Delight scarf employs several knitting techniques to maximize visual interest and highlight the variegated yarn colors:

• Intarsia columns: The pattern arranges multiple mini skeins of highly-variegated yarn in simple intarsia columns, allowing each skein's unique color palette to be displayed distinctly within the scarf structure

Materials

The Dyer's Delight scarf requires approximately 600 yards of fingering-weight yarn. The designer, Amy van de Laar, created the sample scarf using six 100-yard skeins of Naked Skeinz MW Merino 4-ply yarn, which she dyed using food coloring. The pattern notes that leftover sock yarn in variegated or semi-solid shades works equally well as an alternative.

The following needles and tools are required:

• 4mm knitting needles for the main knitting, or a needle size that produces the desired fabric with your chosen yarn
• 4.5mm crochet hook for casting on
• 4.5mm knitting needles for binding off
• A needle for weaving in ends
