Dutch Sky Shawl by Gretha Mensen
What is Being Made
Dutch Sky is an asymmetrical knitted shawl inspired by the beautiful and impressive skies of the Netherlands. The design features a heathered blue-grayish color that evokes the aesthetic of Dutch weather patterns. The shawl measures approximately 78 inches (198 cm) along the top edge wingspan with a width of 29.3 inches (74 cm), making it a substantial wrap suitable for layering and styling versatility.
Design Features and Inspiration
The shawl incorporates two distinct textured elements that work together to capture the essence of Dutch skies. The textured pattern represents raindrops, while the cable pattern depicts cumulous clouds, known locally as 'stapelwolken'. A key feature of Dutch Sky is its reversible construction—the cable pattern is fully reversible, and the textured pattern is equally attractive on both sides, allowing the wearer to display either side as desired. The shawl is finished with a built-in I-cord edge that adds definition and durability to the perimeter.
Knitting Techniques Used
Dutch Sky is worked flat from the right tip to the left edge, creating its characteristic asymmetrical shape. The pattern employs cable knitting techniques combined with textured stitch patterns to achieve the raindrop and cloud motifs. The reversible nature of both the cable and textured patterns demonstrates thoughtful design that maximizes the visual interest of the finished piece regardless of which side is displayed.
Stitches and Pattern Structure
- Cable patterns for representing cumulous clouds
- Textured stitches for representing raindrops
- I-cord edge for finished perimeter

Materials and Yarn Weight
Dutch Sky is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, which provides an ideal balance of drape and stitch definition for displaying both the cable and textured patterns. The heathered blue-grayish yarn color is essential to the design's visual impact, evoking the atmospheric quality of Dutch skies. Standard knitting needles appropriate for DK weight yarn are required.
Customization Options
The pattern allows for adjustments to achieve different sizes and fits by altering yarn weight and/or needle size. This flexibility enables knitters to create variations of the shawl while maintaining the original design aesthetic and proportions.
Skill Level
Dutch Sky is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with cable patterns and more complex textured stitches. The combination of cables and textured elements requires attention to pattern reading and stitch manipulation.
Pattern Format
This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF document, making it accessible for immediate use. The pattern includes fully written-out instructions to guide knitters through the construction process from start to finish.
