Product Description
Sirdar Snuggly Pattercake DK Pattern 4924 – Dungarees, Hat & Socks for Babies and Toddlers
Pattern 4924 from Sirdar is a delightful knitting pattern featuring three coordinating baby and toddler accessories: a pair of dungarees (overalls), a hat, and a pair of socks. Designed for sizes 0–6 months, 6–12 months, and 1–2 years, this set makes an ideal handmade gift or wardrobe staple for little ones. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it well suited to knitters who have moved beyond the basics and are comfortable working shaping and simple construction techniques.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern is written specifically for Sirdar Snuggly Pattercake DK in shade 753, a soft double knitting weight yarn designed with babies in mind. The yarn requirements vary by size and by garment piece:
- Dungarees: 70g (0–6 months), 90g (6–12 months), or 120g (1–2 years)
- Hat: 18g (0–6 months), 20g (6–12 months), or 24g (1–2 years)
- Socks: 12g (0–6 months), 14g (6–12 months), or 17g (1–2 years)
The pattern notes that it is also suitable for several other Sirdar DK-weight yarns, including Snuggly DK, Snuggly Baby Crofter DK, Snuggly Baby Bamboo DK, Snuggly Spots DK, and Snuggly Rascal DK, though yarn amounts may vary when substituting.
In addition to yarn, you will need:
- 4mm (UK8 / USA6) knitting needles – one pair
- 3¼mm (UK10 / USA3) knitting needles – one pair
- 2 buttons for the dungarees
- Stitch holders for use on the dungarees and socks
Tension
The stated tension is 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch using 4mm needles. As with all knitting patterns, checking your tension before beginning is essential to ensure the finished garments match the stated measurements. If you have fewer stitches than stated, switch to a thinner needle; if you have more stitches, switch to a thicker needle.
The Dungarees (Overalls)
The dungarees are the centrepiece of this pattern set and are the most involved of the three pieces. They are constructed to fit chest measurements of 41cm (16in) for 0–6 months, 46cm (18in) for 6–12 months, and 51cm (20in) for 1–2 years, with full lengths (measured to the top of the bib) of 41cm, 46cm, and 54cm respectively.
The dungarees are worked in stocking stitch as the main fabric, with ribbed sections worked on the smaller 3¼mm needles to create neat, stretchy edges. Each leg is worked separately, beginning with the left leg, and shaping is achieved through decreasing at regular intervals — specifically decreasing one stitch at each end on the 7th row and then on every following alternate row. This classic leg-shaping technique creates a tapered silhouette that fits comfortably around a baby's legs.
The bib front is a characteristic feature of dungaree construction, and the pattern includes 2 buttons for fastening, giving the finished garment an authentic dungaree appearance. Stitch holders are used to hold stitches in reserve while other sections are worked, a common technique in garment knitting that allows the knitter to return to live stit
