What is Being Made

Dune and Modesty is a boxy V-neck cardigan designed by Ririko, available in two distinct sleeve length options: 3/4 sleeve or long sleeve. The cardigan features a relaxed, oversized silhouette with generous positive ease built into the design, making it an ideal layering piece for a comfortable, modern aesthetic. The design offers customizable closure options, allowing knitters to choose between traditional button closure or an I-cord closure for a more contemporary finish.

Sizing and Fit

This cardigan is engineered to be worn with substantial positive ease at the bust, ranging from 40 to 60 cm (15¾ to 23½ inches). The sample shown in size XS demonstrates approximately 52 cm (20½ inches) of ease on the model's bust measurement. Finished bust circumference ranges from 130 cm (51¼ inches) in XS to 181 cm (71¼ inches) in 3XL. The length from underarm to hem measures either 35 cm (13¾ inches) for sizes XS through L, or 38 cm (15 inches) for sizes XL through 3XL, providing proportional coverage across the size range.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level knitting project incorporates fundamental shaping techniques suitable for garment construction. The V-neck design requires strategic decreasing to create the angled neckline, while the boxy silhouette is achieved through minimal waist shaping. The pattern includes I-cord as an optional closure detail, which is a tubular knitted cord created using either a specialized I-cord needle or the circular needle technique. Knitters will work with standard stockinette stitch as the primary fabric structure, combined with ribbing for cuff and hem finishing to provide elasticity and definition.

Yarn and Materials

Two distinct yarn options are provided depending on sleeve choice. For the 3/4 sleeve version, the pattern specifies Mythica Fibers Rustic Silk, a luxurious 100% silk yarn available in 430 meters (470 yards) per 100 gram skein. Yardage requirements range from 3 skeins for sizes XS, S, and M to 4 skeins for sizes L, XL, 2XL, and 3XL. The sample shown features the Dune colorway, a warm beige tone.

For the long sleeve version, Mythica Fibers Heavenly Sock is recommended, a premium blend of 80% merino wool, 10% cashmere, and 10% nylon, offering 366 meters (400 yards) per 100 gram skein. This version requires 4 skeins for sizes XS through M, and 5 skeins for sizes L through 3XL. The merino-cashmere-nylon blend provides warmth, softness, and durability suitable for a garment intended for regular wear.

The pattern is written for 4-ply yarn weight, which creates a fabric with excellent stitch definition and drape. Knitters will need appropriate needles for the selected yarn weight, along with buttons or I-cord materials for closure, depending on the chosen finishing option.
