Product Description

DunBroch is a magical kingdom, that lies in the Scottish Highlands. This enchanting place is the home of Princess Merida, a girl who most definitely knows her own mind.

I designed these socks for a young lady who is much like Merida. She is bravely making her way in the big, scary world and is living not too far from where Merida lived.

I wanted this design to reflect the feel of Scotland, and also the strength and determination needed to succeed in life.

The socks feature a twisted panel down the outside of each leg, which is surrounded by a beautifully cosy texture pattern. Although the design appears intricate, it is straightforward to knit and easy to memorise.

The socks come in 3 sizes, and have both written and charted intstructions. The instructions are written using the magic loop method, but other methods can be used.

I used one skein of fingering weight yarn, that I dyed myself. I would recommend a tonal/semi solid to best show off the design.

DunBroch Knitted Socks by Kay Jones

What is Being Made

DunBroch is a pair of knitted socks inspired by the magical Scottish Highland kingdom from Disney's Brave. Designed by Kay Jones, these socks are crafted for intermediate knitters seeking a project that combines visual interest with straightforward construction. The design celebrates Scottish heritage and the strength of character, making them an ideal choice for anyone who appreciates both storytelling and quality knitwear.

Design Features and Construction

The socks showcase a distinctive twisted panel running down the outside of each leg, which serves as the focal point of the design. This twisted panel is surrounded by a beautifully cosy texture pattern that adds depth and visual appeal to the finished garment. Despite the intricate appearance, the pattern is straightforward to knit and easy to memorise, making it accessible to intermediate-level knitters who want to expand their skills without excessive complexity.

The cuff is knitted to a length that can be turned over, providing versatility for different wearing styles and making the socks particularly practical for boot wearing on chilly autumn days. This fold-over cuff design adds both functionality and an extra layer of warmth.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The DunBroch pattern employs several key knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters:

  • Twisted stitches form the prominent panel down the leg, creating visual texture and dimension
  • Texture pattern work surrounds the twisted panel, adding a cosy, tactile quality to the design
  • Cuff construction with a turnover fold, requiring basic shaping and finishing techniques
  • Sock-specific shaping for the heel, foot, and toe sections

Yarn and Materials

DunBroch is designed to be knitted with 4-ply yarn, which provides an excellent weight for creating socks with good stitch definition. The 4-ply weight allows the twisted panels and texture patterns to show clearly while maintaining the durability needed for everyday wear. A single skein of yarn is sufficient to complete this project, making it an economical choice for crafters building their sock collection.

Pattern Format

DunBroch is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing immediate access to the instructions. This format is ideal for knitters who prefer digital patterns they can reference on devices or print for convenience while working.
