Product Description
Duilleag means leaf in Scottish Gaelic, and green leaves are everywhere just now, including growing up from the toe to the cuff of these socks! Starting with a single leaf up the foot, then bringing in a second leaf up the leg, Duilleag is knit from the toe up with a gusset and heel flap. These socks are the perfect mix of relaxing knit and engaging pattern. With four widths and flexible length fitting, these are a great pattern for everyone.
The pattern is fully written and the lace is also charted so whichever way you like to read your patterns, you’re covered! The pattern has been tech edited and test knitted. There’s a screenshot of the pattern, and a list of the stitches used at the bottom of the photos. You will also need to know how to do Judy’s Magic Cast-On and a stretchy bind off like Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off.
Duilleag Socks by Liz Corke
About This Design
Duilleag, meaning "leaf" in Scottish Gaelic, is the second pattern in the Four Seasons of Socks collection. These knitted socks feature a charming leaf motif that grows from the toe to the cuff, combining relaxing knit sections with an engaging lace pattern. The design offers an ideal balance for intermediate knitters seeking both meditative knitting and creative patterning.
Construction Method
These socks are knit from the toe up, a popular construction method that allows for precise fit adjustments. The pattern incorporates a traditional gusset and heel flap, providing structure and durability in high-wear areas. The toe-up approach gives knitters flexibility in yarn usage and the ability to customize the final length before binding off.
Stitch Work and Lace Details
The socks feature a delicate lace pattern worked on each sock, creating visual interest while maintaining wearability. The main fabric is worked in stocking stitch, a fundamental knit technique that creates the smooth, classic appearance of traditional socks. The lace elements are distributed across the sock surface, adding elegance without compromising the sock's function.
Yarn and Materials
- Yarn: Approximately 365 meters (400 yards) of Little Bird Sock by Lottieknits, a 4-ply weight yarn composed of 80% Merino wool and 20% Nylon (400 yards per 100 grams). This blend provides warmth, breathability, and durability.
- Needles: 2.5 mm (US 1.5) circular needles measuring 80 cm (32") or longer, or double-pointed needles (DPNs) using your preferred method for knitting in the round
- Notions: Three stitch markers per sock, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and optional sock blockers for finishing
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 32 stitches and 44 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch when knit in the round. This gauge is essential for achieving proper fit. The socks are available in four finished circumference sizes:
- Small: 17.5 cm (7")
- Medium: 20 cm (8")
- Large: 22.5 cm (9")
- Extra Large: 25 cm (10")
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes familiarity with knitting in the round, basic stitch techniques, and the ability to follow lace charts or written instructions. Knitters should be comfortable with heel flap construction and gusset shaping before beginning this project.
Format
Duilleag is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing immediate access to all instructions, charts, and sizing information for independent knitters.
