Product Description
This pattern was inspired by the gorgeous white beanie the Duchess of Cambridge wore skiing the slopes of Norway.
It is knit in the round on 8mm and 9mm circular needles using the magic loop technique. This is an easy method of working with circular needles which you can easily learn by watching a quick video tutorial, it is a great skill for any knitter to have, and even beginners can learn it!
The beanie uses one ball of Lion Brand, Wool-Ease Thick and Quick, 170gm, 97m which has a yarn gauge of 9stx12 rows over 10cm using 9mm needles. A bright white yarn is preferable if you are wanting a similar look to Kate' beanie. Remaining yarn can be used for a 8.5cm pom pom.
This pattern knits to a regular ladies size, and should fit most women.

What is Being Made
The Duchess Kate Beanie is a classic knitted hat designed to fit a ladies head in one size. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer PlayfulKnits Designs offers a straightforward introduction to hat knitting, making it an ideal project for beginners looking to create a cozy, wearable accessory.
Craft and Techniques
This pattern uses knitting as the primary craft method. The Duchess Kate Beanie employs the magic loop technique, which is a specialized method for knitting in the round using circular needles. The magic loop technique allows knitters to work with a single pair of circular needles by utilizing slack at each end of the needle to comfortably space the remaining stitches for knitting. This technique is particularly useful when working on smaller circumferences, such as hat crowns, without requiring a full set of double-pointed needles. The pattern recommends watching a tutorial to master this technique before beginning.
Stitches Used
The Duchess Kate Beanie is constructed primarily using stocking stitch, the fundamental knit stitch pattern that creates the smooth, classic appearance characteristic of traditional beanies. The pattern works through approximately 30 rows to complete the hat structure.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern suggests Lion Brand Wool-Ease, Thick and Quick in Super Bulky weight. This yarn blend contains 80% acrylic and 20% wool, offering durability and warmth. One ball of 170 grams (97 meters of yardage) is required to complete the beanie, including the pompom.
Needles and Extras: The pattern calls for 8mm circular needles in 40cm or 60cm length, and 9mm circular needles in 40cm size. Knitters may choose to use either the magic loop technique with 40cm needles or switch to longer 60cm circular needles around rows 29 to 30 when additional needle length becomes necessary. Additional supplies include a stitch marker and a pompom maker for finishing the hat.
Difficulty Level and Gauge
Rated as a beginner-friendly project, the Duchess Kate Beanie is accessible to knitters new to hat construction. The pattern specifies a tension of 9 stitches by 12 rows in stocking stitch over 10 centimeters when using 9mm needles. Knitters should adjust needle size as needed to achieve the correct gauge for proper fit and fabric drape.
