Product Description

If you’ve popped into a clothing store within the past several months, you’ve likely seen cute mini-backpacks in their accessory aisle. Claire has fallen in love with them so I decided to make her the Striped Mini-Backpack. Then when my nieces visited, one of them loved Claire’s so I made her this drawstring mini-backpack for her birthday.

Yarn Notes: Worsted weight cotton / 4 yarn was used for the sample shown. I used Lion Brand Yarn’s 24/7 cotton. Approximately 360 yards total.

This pattern includes several photo tutorials to help guide you along the way!

Mini-backpack design is an A Crocheted Simplicity original design.

All of my patterns are written in standard american terms, unless noted otherwise.

Drawstring Mini-Backpack by Jennifer Renaud

What is Being Made

This is a drawstring mini-backpack designed by Jennifer Renaud as a downloadable crochet pattern. The finished backpack measures 6.25" wide by 7" tall by 4.25" deep (not including the hanging loop), making it an ideal size for small essentials, cosmetics, or accessories. The design features a functional drawstring closure and optional plastic canvas reinforcement for structure.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level crochet project uses fundamental techniques suitable for crafters with basic crochet experience. The pattern employs single crochet as the primary stitch, worked in the round and in rows to build the backpack structure. The construction method involves working the first stitch of every row into the same stitch as the turning chain, unless otherwise noted in the pattern instructions.

The backpack incorporates stitch markers (4 or more recommended) to help track stitch placement and pattern progression throughout the project. Optional plastic canvas pieces measuring 4" wide by 6" long can be inserted to add structure and stability to the finished bag, though this step is not required.

Stitches Used

  • Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation and turning chains
  • Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch throughout the pattern
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and finishing

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 13 stitches plus 15.75 rows equaling 3 inches in single crochet. This gauge measurement is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. Crocheters who work on the looser side may need to go down one or two hook sizes to meet the specified gauge, while those who crochet on the tighter side may find the recommended hook size appropriate.

Materials and Yarn

This project uses worsted weight yarn (weight category 4). The sample shown in the pattern was created with Lion Brand Yarn 24/7 Cotton, a 100% mercerized cotton yarn available in 3.5-ounce skeins containing 186 yards (170 meters). The pattern calls for approximately 260 yards of white yarn, with additional yardage in aqua for color work or contrast details.

Any comparable worsted weight yarn may be substituted for the specified Lion Brand yarn, allowing crafters flexibility in fiber choice. The cotton composition of the sample yarn provides a lightweight, breathable fabric suitable for a small accessory bag.

Tools Required

  • Crochet hook size G/6 (4.00mm) – the recommended hook size for worsted weight yarn
  • Yarn needle – for weaving in ends and seaming if needed
  • Stitch markers (4 or more) – for tracking stitches during construction
  • Plastic canvas pieces (2), each 4" W x 6" L – optional for added structure

Pattern Format

This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF document, making it easy to print or reference on digital devices while working. The pattern uses standard US crochet terminology and abbreviations, including ch, sl st, st(s), sc, Rep, Rnd, RS/WS, and SM for accessibility and clarity.
