Product Description
This is a great pattern to start getting used to using the new crocodile stitch on the loom!!! I wrote and videoed the pattern for the 80 peg 3/8" gauge child to small adult, but provided a formula for being able to make it any size you desire using any loom round or flexee or x loom. In the video I used the flexee loom but you can use a round loom as well. This is an advanced pattern, and please keep in mind the stitch in worked on the inside rather than on the outside when the garment is coming through the loom. I used less than a skein of Lions Brand Mandala Sparkle yarn but honestly if you are wanting to make the hook/ bonnet bigger a full skein will probably do you just fine. You really don't need much on supplies just yarn, loom, looming hook, and crochet/ crafters needle. That is it. Please feel free to contact me if you run into any questions!!!
Dragon Hood or Bonnet by Scarlett Royale
What Is Being Made
The Dragon Hood or Bonnet is an advanced loom knitting project designed to create a decorative and whimsical headwear piece. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for constructing a fitted hood or bonnet using loom knitting techniques, suitable for various head sizes depending on loom selection and yarn weight.
Craft and Technique Overview
This project uses loom knitting, a fiber arts technique that creates knitted fabric using a circular loom with pegs rather than traditional knitting needles. Loom knitting produces similar results to needle knitting but offers an accessible alternative that can be easier for some crafters to manage. The Dragon Hood pattern employs loom knitting fundamentals to construct a three-dimensional hat structure.
Stitches and Loom Techniques Used
- Chain Cast On (CH CO): The foundation technique for this project. A slip knot is created, then loops are sequentially placed behind each peg and tightened by pulling working yarn through each loop, establishing the base row of stitches around the loom.
- Bind Off (BO): The finishing technique used to secure stitches and complete the project. This involves knitting adjacent pegs and transferring loops to consolidate and close off the fabric.
- Knit Stitch: The primary stitch structure used throughout the pattern to build the hood or bonnet fabric.
Materials and Equipment
Loom: The pattern is designed for a 3/8" gauge Flexee 80-peg loom, though crafters can substitute any loom appropriate for hat-making. The loom must have a peg count divisible by 4, with suitable options including 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76, 80, 84, 88, or 92 pegs. Loom selection should match the intended wearer's head size.
Yarn: DK weight yarn is specified for this pattern. The sample project uses Lions Brand Mandala Sparkle in the color Crux. One skein of DK weight yarn is typically sufficient to complete the project, with yarn remaining after completion.
Tools: A looming hook (the specialized tool used to manipulate stitches on the loom), a crochet hook, or a crafters needle for finishing work and securing ends.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as advanced, indicating it is best suited for crafters with prior loom knitting experience and familiarity with foundational techniques. Crafters new to loom knitting should build foundational skills before attempting this project.
