Product Description
Fractals have always fascinated me. They are a beautiful combination of mathematics and art. A fractal is a pattern that looks similar at every level of magnification. The Dragon Curve Fractal is the fractal featured in Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton.
I designed this scarf to show off the lacy design of the Dragon Curve Fractal. It is a medium weight, double knit scarf that features the fractal repeated all along the length of the scarf. Contrasting yarns show off the design, especially if one of the yarns is a variegated yarn. The length of the scarf is customizable, depending on how many repeats of the charts are worked.
Instructions are included for the double knitting technique. The color work design is chart only, not written instructions.
Required yarn: 300 yards (274 m) each of two colors of fingering weight yarn for a 52 inch (132 cm) scarf. Use 380 yards (347 m) for a 67 inch (170 cm) scarf.
Worked on size 1 US (2.25 mm) needles.

What Is Being Made
The Dragon Curve Fractal Scarf is a medium-weight double knit scarf designed by Lisa Hannan Fox that showcases the mathematical beauty of fractal patterns. The scarf features the Dragon Curve Fractal repeated along its entire length, creating a visually striking design where contrasting yarns emphasize the geometric pattern. The fractal motif repeats throughout the scarf, with the total length customizable based on how many chart repeats the knitter chooses to work.
About Fractals and Design
Fractals represent a fascinating intersection of mathematics and art. At their core, fractals are patterns that exhibit self-similarity at every level of magnification. The Dragon Curve Fractal is created by applying a mathematical transformation to a line repeatedly, generating the intricate geometric pattern that forms the basis of this scarf's design. This mathematical approach to knitting creates a sophisticated, modern aesthetic that appeals to crafters interested in both artistic and technical challenges.
Knitting Techniques Used
This scarf employs double knit construction, a technique that creates a reversible, double-layered fabric from a single set of needles. Double knitting allows two colors to be worked simultaneously, with each color appearing on one side of the fabric while the other color is carried on the reverse. This technique is particularly effective for displaying contrasting color patterns and creates a fabric with excellent drape and structure. The pattern uses chart-based colorwork, where knitters follow a visual chart to determine when to switch between the two contrasting yarn colors, building the Dragon Curve design row by row.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The scarf is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit stitch pattern that creates the smooth, classic V-textured fabric ideal for displaying colorwork designs. The stockinette base provides an even canvas for the Dragon Curve Fractal pattern to stand out clearly. The colorwork pattern itself is achieved through strategic yarn color changes that follow the provided charts, allowing the geometric fractal design to emerge as the knitter progresses through the repeats.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Dragon Curve Fractal Scarf is designed to be worked with fingering weight yarn (also called 4-ply yarn), a lightweight, delicate yarn that creates refined, detailed fabric. The pattern calls for approximately 250 to 300 yards each of two contrasting colors to complete a 52-inch (132 cm) length scarf. The designer specifically recommends using contrasting yarns to showcase the fractal design, with particular emphasis on the visual impact when one of the two yarns is a variegated yarn—yarn that features multiple colors throughout its length. This color variation adds additional depth and visual interest to the already complex geometric pattern.
Needles and Tools
Knitters will need Size 1 US (2.25 mm) needles to achieve the proper gauge for this project. These small needles are appropriate for fingering weight yarn and create the tight, defined fabric necessary for the colorwork pattern to display clearly. A tapestry needle is required for weaving in the yarn ends that result from the color changes throughout the double knit construction.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a stockinette gauge of 40 stitches and 52 rows over a standard 4-inch (10 cm) square. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this project, as it directly affects the final dimensions of the scarf and ensures the Dragon Curve Fractal pattern displays at the intended scale and clarity.
Customization and Length
One of the appealing features of this scarf pattern is its flexibility. The length is entirely customizable depending on how many repeats of the charts the knitter chooses to work. Knitters who wish to create a longer scarf simply need to obtain additional yarn beyond the recommended 250-300 yard base amount and continue working additional chart repeats until reaching their desired length.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic knitting skills and are ready to tackle more complex techniques. The combination of double knit construction and chart-based colorwork requires attention to detail and familiarity with managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously, but the rewards are a sophisticated, mathematically-inspired finished piece.
