Product Description
Dot the Little Doll is a sweet doll inspired by my childhood. I would watch a movie with ruby slippers over and over, pretending to wear the ruby slippers too! So naturally Dot has beautiful red shoes and I couldn’t resist adding a little market bag too. Dot is an intermediate amigurumi (crochet) pattern written in US (American) terms. The pattern includes detailed instructions in an easy to follow layout but a knowledge of basic crochet stitches and techniques used to make amigurumi is essential. Your tension, yarn thickness and hook size used will affect the size of your finished items. My Dot is approx. 22cm tall (8 ½ inches).
Dot the Little Doll by Cara Engwerda
Project Overview
Dot the Little Doll is a charming crocheted amigurumi doll designed by Cara Engwerda and inspired by classic childhood memories. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a sweet doll character complete with distinctive red shoes and an accompanying market bag, making it a delightful handmade toy suitable for display or gifting.
What You'll Create
This downloadable crochet pattern produces a finished doll with carefully crafted proportions and charming details. The design includes the doll's body, head, and limbs, along with a separate market bag accessory. The doll features signature red shoes inspired by classic storybook imagery, and the inclusion of a miniature market bag adds an extra element of character and play value to the finished piece.
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate project employs fundamental amigurumi construction methods combined with shaping techniques. The pattern utilizes the magic ring technique to begin projects with minimal center holes, allowing for seamless three-dimensional forms. Increases and decreases are strategically placed throughout to create the doll's dimensional shape, while consistent tension and stitch placement ensure even, professional-looking results.
Stitches and Abbreviations
- sc – single crochet, the foundation stitch for amigurumi work
- hdc – half double crochet, used for varied texture and structure
- dc – double crochet, creating lighter, more open sections
- ch – chain stitch, used for foundation and connecting elements
- MR – magic ring, the starting technique for seamless circular pieces
- inc – single crochet increase (2 sc in one stitch), used for expanding sections
Materials Required
This pattern calls for a 2.0mm crochet hook (US size B-1) and 4-ply yarn in fingering weight. Total yarn requirement is less than 50 grams, making this an economical project. The pattern specifies yarn in five colors: brown, red, nude, blue, and light blue, allowing you to create the doll's skin tone, signature red shoes, clothing, and accessories. The pattern also requires 7mm safety eyes for facial features, ensuring a secure and professional finish suitable for a handmade toy.
Yarn Weight Specifications
The pattern accommodates both 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, with the primary recommendation being 4-ply fingering weight yarn. This lighter yarn weight allows for precise stitch definition and creates a delicate, finely-detailed finished doll. The small hook size combined with lightweight yarn produces the tight, even fabric necessary for quality amigurumi construction.
Skill Level and Pattern Format
Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, Dot the Little Doll is designed for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle shaping, color changes, and three-dimensional construction. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF file, using US crochet terminology for clarity and accessibility. This format allows you to work at your own pace and refer back to instructions as needed throughout your project.
