Digger Crochet Pattern by Kerri's Crochet
What Is Being Made
The Digger is a crochet amigurumi-style construction project designed by Kerri's Crochet. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a three-dimensional digger toy or decorative piece using fundamental crochet techniques. The project is suitable for intermediate-level crocheters and can be followed along with an accompanying video tutorial.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs several core crochet techniques to construct the digger. The main body and structural components are created using row-based flat crochet work, with pieces subsequently assembled together using a sewing needle and thread. The pattern incorporates shaping through consistent stitch repetition across multiple rows, and finishing details include a neatening row that adds definition to the edges. Optional embroidery work using grey cotton thread allows crafters to add decorative details such as dots on joiners, enhancing the finished appearance of the piece.
Stitches Used
The Digger pattern utilizes a variety of fundamental crochet stitches to create texture and structure:
- Chain stitch (ch) - Used to create the foundation and turning chains throughout the pattern
- Half treble crochet (htr) - Forms the primary fabric of the digger body and main structural components
- Double crochet (dc) - Applied in the neatening row to finish edges and create definition
- Slip stitch (sl st) - Provides joining capability for connecting separate pieces
- Treble crochet (tr) - Available in the pattern's stitch abbreviations for additional texture options
- Double treble crochet (dtr) - Included in the pattern's stitch library for varied height and drape
Materials Required
The Digger pattern calls for DK weight yarn (also referred to as 8 ply wool, light worsted in US terminology, or double knit in UK terminology). The designer used multiple colors including a main color, black, and grey crochet cotton or wool to create the digger's distinct visual elements.
Essential tools and notions include a 2.5mm crochet hook, scissors for cutting yarn, a standard sewing needle for assembling pieces, a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends, sewing thread to stitch the digger components together, and optional grey cotton thread for embroidery work on decorative details.
Pattern Structure
The Digger Body section demonstrates the foundational construction method. The pattern begins with 18 chain stitches, followed by working half treble crochet stitches across multiple rows. The initial row skips the first two chains and works one half treble in each remaining stitch. Subsequent rows maintain the stitch count using turning chains and consistent half treble placement. A neatening row adds finishing detail to the sides and edges, creating a polished appearance before assembly.
