Product Description
This fun 2-color crescent shawl has been created to celebrate 5th anniversary of Vlnene Sestry, a LYS in the heart of Brno, the Czech Republic. Lovely girls from the shop translated the pattern for you too :)
The shawl begins at the center and is worked outwards to the border. It is worked in sections, alternating two stitch patterns: garter stitch and simple tuck stitch. Then it is finished with a simple lace border. The sample shawl is worked in a solid and a speckle but would look equally beautiful when knit in two solids or two speckles. The border is both charted and written out.
Different Light Shawl by Justyna Lorkowska
What is Being Made
Different Light is a knitted shawl designed by Justyna Lorkowska. This triangular shawl measures approximately 160 cm (63 inches) wide and 48 cm (19 inches) long at the center, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wrapping.
Craft and Construction Method
This is a knitting project worked from the center outward. The shawl construction begins at a central point and expands progressively toward the border. The design incorporates strategic increases throughout to create the triangular silhouette characteristic of center-out shawls.
Stitch Techniques and Pattern Structure
Different Light employs several knitting techniques to build its structure:
- Yarn overs (yo) – used as decorative increases that create lacy openings throughout the fabric
- Knit stitches (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl stitches (p) – incorporated for textural variation
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a decrease stitch used for shaping
- Slip stitches (sl) – used for various techniques including slipped yarn overs (sl1yo, sl2yo)
- Brioche knit (brk) – an advanced stitch technique adding dimensional texture
- Pass 2 slipped stitches over (pss2o) – a double decrease creating definition
The pattern features two yarn over increases in every row plus six additional increase rows, creating a balanced expansion as the shawl grows from center to edge.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Different Light is designed to be worked in 4-ply yarn weight, specifically using Martin's Lab Comfy Merino. This yarn is composed of 100% superwash merino fiber, offering softness and easy care. The pattern requires 1 skein of contrasting color 1 (CC1) and 1 skein of contrasting color 2 (CC2), with each skein containing 400 meters (440 yards) per 100 grams. The use of two contrasting colors adds visual interest and allows the stitch patterns to stand out distinctly.
Skill Level
This shawl is rated as a beginner difficulty project, making it accessible to knitters new to shawl construction while still offering opportunities to practice fundamental techniques.
Pattern Format
Different Light is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, designed for personal use only. The pattern includes comprehensive abbreviations and instructions to guide knitters through the center-out construction method.
