Product Description
A cosy cowl is perfect for the Tweed Jacket. Use the leftover yarn and make a small cowl. Why not add a complimentary colour to the outfit and knit a larger cowl to wear over the small one together with wristwarmers. A stunning rose red cowl and wristwarmers complement the Tweed Jacket outfit.
Gauge: 21 sts and 40 rows with Alv held double and 2.5 mm/US 1.5 in Dewdrop pattern measure 10 cm square. 26 sts and 44 rows with Huldra and 3 mm/2.5 needle in Dewdrop pattern measures 10 cm square. 28 sts and 32 rows in st st measures 10 cm square.
Notes: The cowl and wristwarmers are worked flat and seamed. The small size cowl is worked in Alv Kamgarn (laceweight) held double, while the large size cowl is worked in Huldra Kamgarn (fingering). The holes made by the lace can be used as buttonholes for the cowl if preferred.
Dewdrop Cowl by Linda Marveng
Project Overview
The Dewdrop Cowl is an intermediate-level knitted cowl designed by Linda Marveng. This downloadable PDF pattern offers a versatile neckwear project that can be customized in size and styled in multiple ways. The cowl is designed to complement the Tweed Jacket and can be paired with coordinating wristwarmers for a cohesive outfit.
What is Being Made
This pattern creates a cosy cowl—a tubular neckwear piece that drapes around the neck and shoulders. The Dewdrop Cowl is offered in two sizes: Size S with finished measurements of 48 cm/19" width and 27 cm/10.75" height, and Size L with finished measurements of 68 cm/26.75" width and 47 cm/18.5" height. The design allows for creative styling options, including wearing a larger cowl layered over a smaller one, or pairing it with complementary wristwarmers to create a coordinated set.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Dewdrop Cowl employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The pattern utilizes a lace stitch motif called the Dewdrop pattern, which creates an openwork fabric with visual interest. The cowl is worked in the round, a common construction method for neckwear that eliminates the need for seaming. The pattern includes guidance on adjusting needle size to achieve proper gauge, ensuring the finished garment meets the intended dimensions and drape.
Stitches Used
- Dewdrop Pattern: A lace stitch that forms the primary decorative element of the cowl, creating an openwork design
- Stockinette Stitch (st st): Used in sections of the pattern for a smooth, classic knit fabric
Yarn and Needles
The Dewdrop Cowl is designed for 4-ply and lace weight yarns, offering flexibility in yarn selection. The pattern provides specific gauge information for different yarn and needle combinations:
- For Size L: 3 mm/US 2.5 needles are recommended, with a gauge of 26 stitches and 44 rows in the Dewdrop pattern measuring 10 cm/4" square when worked with Huldra yarn
- For Size S: 2.5 mm/US 1.5 needles are recommended, with a gauge of 21 stitches and 40 rows in the Dewdrop pattern measuring 10 cm/4" square when worked with Alv yarn held double
- Stockinette stitch gauge: 28 stitches and 32 rows in 10 cm/4" square
Knitters should adjust needle size as needed to match the specified gauge for their chosen yarn. Additional notions include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and optional buttons if a button closure is preferred for the cowl.
Design Features
The Dewdrop Cowl pattern encourages creative customization and layering. Knitters can use leftover yarn from other projects, such as the Tweed Jacket, to create a complementary cowl. The pattern suggests knitting a larger cowl in one colour and a smaller cowl in a contrasting colour to wear together, allowing for personalized colour combinations. A rose red cowl paired with wristwarmers creates a striking accent to coordinate with jacket outfits.
