Product Description

Lines of Greek Fretwork stream across the Damaris Scarf in waves of color. The scarf uses easy intarsia to frame the main mosaic pattern within a seed stitch border. Instructions are given for two sizes. The larger version (pictured in the sample) can double as a mini-blanket to wrap around the shoulders on a chilly evening.

The scarf is worked flat from one end to the other. Three contrasting colors can be used to create a gradient effect, or the entire mosaic pattern can be worked in a single contrasting color, if desired.

Instructions for the mosaic section are both written and charted.

What Is Being Made

The Damaris Scarf is a knitted accessory featuring decorative Greek fretwork patterns that stream across the fabric in waves of color. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished scarf measuring 60 inches (152 cm) in length, with width options of either 13 inches (33 cm) or 17 inches (43 cm) depending on which size is selected. The design showcases a sophisticated mosaic pattern framed within seed stitch borders, making it an elegant accessory suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions.

Techniques Used

The Damaris Scarf employs intarsia as its primary colorwork technique, which allows the designer to incorporate multiple colors in a controlled, structured manner. The pattern uses mosaic knitting to create the intricate geometric designs, and seed stitch is utilized to frame the main pattern sections. The scarf is worked from charts or written instructions, giving knitters flexibility in how they prefer to follow the pattern. Blocking is recommended after completion to achieve the specified gauge and ensure proper drape and sizing of the finished piece.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch – forms the primary fabric base and is used to measure gauge at 20 stitches by 30 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) after blocking
  • Seed Stitch – creates the border framing around the mosaic pattern sections
  • Mosaic Stitch – produces the geometric fretwork patterns that characterize the design
  • Intarsia Colorwork – integrates the contrasting colors in a structured, easy-to-follow manner

Materials and Tools

The Damaris Scarf requires worsted weight yarn in an aran weight category. Yardage needs vary by size: the smaller version requires 560 yards (512 m) of main color yarn plus 45 yards (41 m) each of three contrasting colors, while the larger size needs 750 yards (686 m) of main color and 60 yards (55 m) each of the three contrast colors. The sample shown uses Malabrigo Worsted, a 100% merino yarn with 210 yards per 3.5 ounce skein, in the colorway Pale Khaki for the main color, with Purple Mystery, Purple Magic, and Cuarzo as the three contrasting colors.

Knitting needles required are US size 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles measuring 24 inches (60 cm) or longer in length. A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in ends and finishing. While exact gauge is not critical to the success of the project, achieving the specified gauge of 20 stitches by 30 rows per 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch after blocking will ensure the scarf reaches the intended finished dimensions.
