Cushion Covers in Hayfield Chunky Tweed – Pattern 7496

This downloadable PDF knitting pattern from Hayfield presents four distinct cushion cover designs, each worked in Hayfield Chunky Tweed yarn. All four covers are knitted to approximately 41 x 41 cm (16 x 16 in), with the exception of the Cabled Cushion Cover which measures a slightly narrower 39 x 41 cm (15½ x 16 in). The collection offers a wonderful variety of classic knitting techniques, making it suitable for knitters who want to practise different stitch patterns while producing a set of beautifully coordinated home accessories.

About Hayfield Chunky Tweed Yarn

Hayfield Chunky Tweed (shade reference F017) is a chunky weight yarn that brings rustic, textured warmth to any knitted project. Its tweed character means that each of the four cushion cover designs benefits from a rich, country-inspired aesthetic that suits both traditional and contemporary interiors. The yarn is sold in 100g balls, and all four designs require either two or three balls depending on the specific cover being made.

Materials and Tools Required

  • Yarn: Hayfield Chunky Tweed (F017) in the specific shades listed for each design (see individual cover details below)
  • Knitting needles: One pair of 6½mm (UK3 – USA10.5) knitting needles
  • Cable needle: Required for the Cabled Cushion Cover only
  • Zip fastener: One 36cm (14 in) zip fastener per cushion cover

The Four Cushion Cover Designs

Moss Stitch Cushion Cover

The Moss Stitch Cushion Cover measures approximately 41 x 41 cm (16 x 16 in) and is worked entirely in moss stitch, one of the most beloved and versatile of all knitting stitch patterns. Moss stitch is created by alternating knit and purl stitches across each row, then offsetting the pattern on the following row so that knit stitches sit above purl stitches and vice versa. This produces a dense, slightly raised, pebbly texture that lies flat without curling at the edges — an ideal quality for cushion covers. The tactile surface of moss stitch is further enhanced by the natural tweed flecks in Hayfield Chunky Tweed shade 186, giving the finished cover a classic, handcrafted feel. This design requires 3 x 100g balls.

Fair Isle Cushion Cover

The Fair Isle Cushion Cover measures approximately 41 x 41 cm (16 x 16 in) and introduces colourwork to the collection. Fair Isle is a traditional stranded knitting technique originating from the Fair Isle in Scotland, in which two or more colours are worked across a row to create repeating geometric or pictorial motifs. Yarn not in use is carried across the back of the work, creating a double layer of fabric that adds warmth and structure. This design uses a main shade of Hayfield Chunky Tweed shade 180 alongside a contrast shade of Hayfield Chunky Tweed shade 185, creating a striking two-tone pattern. The main shade requires 2 x 100g balls and the contrast shade requires 1 x 100g ball. The tweed texture of the yarn adds an extra layer of visual interest to the colourwork motifs.

Cabled Cushion Cover

The Cabled Cushion Cover measures approximately 39 x 41 cm (15½ x 16 in) and showcases the classic art of cable knitting. Cables are formed by temporarily placing a set of stitches onto a cable needle, knitting the next stitches from the main needle, and then knitting the held stitches — this crossing action creates the characteristic rope-like or twisted column effect that is synonymous with traditional Aran and fisherman knitting. Cables add considerable depth and dimension to the fabric, and when worked in a chunky tweed yarn such as Hayfield Chunky Tweed shade
