Product Description
I moved to Michigan in 1993. When my Mom came up for her first visit she felt like she was way out in the country because there were no curbs or sidewalks, even dirt roads in a lot of places. Imagine that! She is a city girl through and through as am I if the truth be told! Isn’t curb a funny word? This pattern is knit from cuff to toe with an easy to remember pattern once you get going! These socks have a lot of “curb appeal"! The Gradiance yarn from The Unique Sheep is perfect for the color changing yarns just like the autumn leaves in Michigan. I love the Mountain Colors too and have a lot in my stash! This is our "Mystery Sock" for Socktoberfest. We had a really great time. I just finished a pair for my Mom! Thank you for looking.

Curb Socks by Phyll Lagerman
What is Being Made
The Curb Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed by Phyll Lagerman, inspired by the designer's experience moving to Michigan and reflecting on the contrast between rural and urban landscapes. These socks feature a color-changing yarn that mimics the appearance of autumn leaves, making them a seasonal project perfect for fall knitting celebrations like Socktoberfest. The design emphasizes both visual appeal and practical wearability, with the designer noting the socks have significant "curb appeal."
Knitting Techniques
The Curb Socks are knit from cuff to toe using a straightforward construction method. The pattern features an easy-to-remember stitch pattern that becomes intuitive once you establish the rhythm, making it accessible for intermediate knitters who have foundational skills but are ready for slightly more complex colorwork or stitch patterns. The use of double pointed needles allows for seamless, circular knitting in the round, which is the traditional method for sock construction.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic fabric base for these socks. The pattern incorporates a repeating stitch pattern that is simple enough to memorize, allowing knitters to work without constantly referencing the instructions once they understand the repeat sequence.
Materials and Specifications
- Yarn: Approximately 350 yards of sock or fingering weight yarn (4-ply). The sample shown uses 100 grams of Tinsel Toes in the Gradiance Collection from The Unique Sheep, a color-changing yarn specifically selected for its ability to display multiple autumn-inspired hues throughout the knitted fabric.
- Needles: Set of 5 US 1 1/2 double pointed needles, or the size needed to achieve the correct gauge
- Gauge: 8 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch, which is standard for fingering weight sock yarn and ensures proper fit and fabric drape
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, these socks are suitable for knitters with prior experience in basic sock construction and comfortable working with double pointed needles. The memorable stitch pattern and straightforward cuff-to-toe construction make this an ideal project for knitters looking to expand their skills without overwhelming complexity.
