Product Description
This hat pattern was used in a workshop in my shop. We had good results and this is a good hat with which to begin lace knitting from a chart. This is pretty easy, as far as lace goes and works up nicely in Reynolds Revue. Revue is a superwash merino with good stitch definition.
Not for the true beginner, but fine for all others.
Cupid's Arrow Hat by Sharon Mooney
What Is Being Made
Cupid's Arrow Hat (K177) is an intermediate-level knitted hat designed by Sharon Mooney. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a fitted hat suitable for large children through adults, accommodating head circumferences up to 23 inches. The hat is constructed using worsted-weight yarn and circular knitting techniques to produce a seamless, professional-quality garment.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created entirely through knitting, utilizing both circular and double-pointed needles to construct the hat from the crown downward or in sections. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should have foundational skills in basic stitches and shaping techniques before beginning this project. The design employs circular knitting methods, which are ideal for creating seamless, tubular garments like hats.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Cupid's Arrow Hat pattern incorporates several essential knitting stitches and techniques:
- Knit (K) — the fundamental stitch that forms the base fabric
- Purl (P) — used to create textural variation and pattern interest
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog) — a single decrease that reduces stitches by one
- Purl 3 Together (P3tog) — a double decrease that reduces stitches by two
- Slip, Slip, Knit (Sk2po) — an alternative decrease method created by slipping two stitches together as if to knit, then knitting one stitch and passing the slipped stitches over
- Stockinette Stitch — the primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side (or knitting all stitches when working in the round)
- Stitch Marker Placement (Pm) — used to mark pattern repeats and shaping points throughout the hat
These decreases are strategically placed to shape the crown of the hat, creating the characteristic fitted silhouette. The pattern uses abbreviations and terminology standard to knitting instructions, allowing knitters to follow row-by-row construction with clarity.
Materials and Tools
The Cupid's Arrow Hat pattern specifies the following materials and tools:
- Yarn: Approximately two skeins of Reynolds "Revue" (100% Merino Wool Extrafine Superwash, 112 yards per 50-gram skein), color 1485. This high-quality merino wool is superwash-treated, making the finished hat easy to care for and suitable for frequent wear.
- Needles: One 16-inch circular knitting needle in US size 6, paired with a set of four US size 6 double-pointed needles for completing the crown shaping
- Notions: A split ring stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and a yarn needle or large embroidery needle for weaving in ends
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 5 stitches and 7 rows per 1 inch when measured over stockinette stitch on circular needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the hat fits correctly at the specified 23-inch head circumference. Knitters should always knit a gauge swatch before beginning the project to verify their tension matches the pattern requirements.
